Are the teens in your life obsessed with Apple "My Cards" and beaming each other? Or is there something wrong with the children in my life. They keep making new "Cards" and seem to do nothing but struggle to get the beaming function to work... which it doesn't always. I never would have guessed that digital business cards would be such a big hit, what's next? Hanging out on LinkedIn? Briefcases?(briefcases were a minor fad when I was in highschool so... IDK maybe I can't talk)

@jgordon @babelcarp I'm baffled by it. It's like discovering teens excited about IDK ... cubicles?Though, about that-- I had a college student tell me he though cubicles were "really cool" and "a neat little idea" and I realized he'd be traumatized by open office plans and had a point.

@jgordon @babelcarp Their parents don't let them use much social media, which is probably for the best. They mostly use discord and text messages as far as I can tell. The discord groups concern me a little because its very unsupervised, but young people also need private places. If a creep showed up in a teen discord what reporting options do they have? I should probably learn about that. These groups are supposed to be all young people but that can attract bad actors.

@jgordon I'd consider facebook worse than discord unless the parents are on there too... which is it's own problem. Ultimately this is part of what I'm hoping to do by having them run their own social media on the school intranet. I want them to be the rule-makers and moderators so they realize that the choices made by such people are ... choices. So they know that making their own spaces with their own rules is always an option.

@jgordon I have a few friends who do "extremist monitoring" by making fake accounts and joining extremist groups on discord, facebook, etc. They now see things you had to go to the dark web to find on the regular. But really we need more people doing this kind of work. I don't think we can assume the FBI or anyone else is "on top of it."And these kinds of groups need to be exposed more often. To force them in to deeper less easy to stumble in to places.

@futurebird @jgordon @babelcarp With third party discord servers, they could report to the servers' admins who could then kick the person. But if it's just a circle of friends, they could easily create their own discord server. Then they would be the admins, and decide who to let onto the server, and also be able to kick them as needed. https://discord.com/blog/starting-your-first-discord-server

@DaveMWilburn @jgordon I was thinking more of the groups where they aren't breaking any laws. The ideological mommy groups. Homeschooling groups, neighborhood watch groups.

@DaveMWilburn @jgordon I think you are absolutely right about anything that is illegal, though. but if we are leaving it all to professional who are they? who are they looking out for?

@futurebird @jgordon I hope they're taking plenty of precautions. My adult son plays online games with people all over the world. He's learned that to be truly safe you would need a dedicated computer set up with a fake name and using a mobile connection from various locations other than your home. Proxy servers and fake accounts aren't enough to protect your identity if you are connected often or for a long period of time.

@futurebird @DaveMWilburn @jgordon whether or not they break laws is immaterial. People who monitor and expose fascism put themselves at great risk (I have a friend who was quite impactful at this, and their company was purposefully driven out of business and they had to erase every of their online existence for their safety.)

@futurebird @jgordon @babelcarp I can sympathize. I had one (and only one) job that used open floor plan and I will cheer on cubicles and sing their praises if it means that no one has to suffer through open floor plan again.

@futurebird @DaveMWilburn @jgordon Given the laws are being shaped increasingly to protect the far right and fascists, whether or not a group breaks laws to monitor or defend us from the far right and fascists isn't the most important thing about them.

@futurebird @jgordon For those who don't interact with white supremacists or engage in this type of monitoring, I noticed something peculiar. Before and during the Trump presidency, the conspiracy theories of white supremacists painted him as a lone noble hero defending America from this or that Jewish conspiracy. He was the one standing up to the Jews and protecting us all with his Superior Whiteness Powers. Then the pandemic happened, and Trump demanded praise for the vaccine.1/

@futurebird @DaveMWilburn @jgordon White supremacists have been working on infiltrating law enforcement for decades. It is absolutely not safe to assume that the FBI will effectively deal with them.

@futurebird @jgordon Ever since then, the conspiracy theories from white supremacists painted Trump as someone either working with the Jews or being controlled by the Jews.See, white supremacists believe that "the jab" is a Jewish plot to genocide white people.Remember when Trump had that very public dinner with Holocaust-deniers? That was the low point in his relationship with white supremacists. He needs them. They did all the heavy lifting in organizing January 6.2/3

@futurebird @jgordon They have come back to his side when it became obvious he was going to be the Republican candidate for president.I cannot stress enough the potential for driving a wedge between Trump and white supremacists. If you run into one, remind them that Trump once again demanded praise for the vaccine during that debate everyone talks about.Things are not hopeless, and keeping tabs on those degenerate morons has real value.3/3

@futurebird @DaveMWilburn @jgordon Erm... @Bellingcat ? A recent talk on their podcast feed was on extremism (and the monitoring thereof) in Gaming Spaces, for instance Don't freelance infiltrating extremism. You wouldn't join your local Klan/MAGA chapter IRL in flesh space armed with just good intentions and a winning smile. Do not underestimate online spaces by treating them differently.Yes, we need more people doing this. But not like that.
