A neat way to introduce the fediverse is to write down your email address:myname@domain.net"you know what this is it's an email. OK what about this?"@futurebird@sauropods.win"This is a new kind of address. This is mine. You need to get on the fediverse to use it. It's like twitter, but no one guy owns it. We run our own servers, it's independent social media."This got my brother more interested. The handle format is kind of eye catching and people like to keep up with "new tech"

@SrRochardBunson I also like to say "Someday you might be able to connect it to X too @name@X.com but twitter hasn't kept up with the new protocol you can only see X people there."

@futurebird I wish people didn't get so hung up on thinking it's super complicated. Yeah, the Fediverse is harder to use than, say, Facebook. Meanwhile, Facebook pretty much knows what color undies people buy and Mastodon *really* isn't that much harder to use.IMO the real problem is just how much people just seem to not be willing even to make the effort to change. Even when that effort is actually shockingly low once they sit down and actually do it. I swear, some of the biggest lockin seems to occur from just sheer laziness of the average person.

Everyone remembers when website and emails started cropping up... then later twitter handles and hash tags. And some people remember not keeping up and they might want to.Go on and put a fediverse address on your email and contact cards. DO NOT explain it on the digital contact card (or your apple "My Card" if you are like my students and obsessed with those for some reason)(My students get my contact info for social media server that they run on our intranet.)

@futurebirdThis is how I explain to people too. The email analogy works well too in that you can explain how we can communicate even though we're not in a centralized walled garden. It's just like how people with different email clients can send and receive messages with each other.

@futurebird On this kind of thing, there was a turn of phrase that occurred to me the other day. Wish I'd written it down, but I think it was this:1994: "Are you connected to the internet?"2024: "Are you connected in the Fediverse?"

@nazokiyoubinbou @ChrisWere God yes. I force myself to use it once a week for GOTV reasons, and in a futile attempt to rescue the people there. I really need to FORCE myself. It's horrible. Even with all the ads blocked and a bunch of software extensions to "protect" me from the worst of it.

@nazokiyoubinbou @futurebird It's so annoying difficult to do the simplest thing.Different pages have different ways of doing admin things, for no reason whatsoever.Privacy settings are really confusing, and I consider myself pretty good on both privacy knowledge and navigating bad UIs.It's just horrible in every way you can imagine, and being 'good with computers' in no way aids you thorough the quagmire.

@grumpasaurus @futurebird I had to force myself to start thinking of those as "hashtags" when I realized I would be a terrible person for giggling if anyone brought up the "pound me too" movement in a situation where they could see my face.

@futurebird @grumpasaurus Yeah that is the exact reaction I was trying to avoid. And a, "wait no, that situation is very serious but let me explain why I find this other tangentially related thing funny" doesn't go over well in the moment.

@futurebird kinda like thirty years ago in 1994 for the early homepages with "@" user links (not ~user) neosoft.com/@moi * an email address was implied (suffix becomes prefix) but the person seeing that line on a business card had to first find something called a "web browser" ... and specify ":8080" if their school or work network included TCP/IP
