@stux Yep, same deal in live theatre. Test it in dress rehearsal to make sure you've actually got signal in there and it all sounds okay. Set your cue early enough that the call comes through in time. Simple.

@grammargirl If Broken Sword 6 ever comes to fruition, I hope they make this joke in it: https://brokensword.fandom.com/wiki/Nicole_Collard

@tomjennings Aye, if I've worked this out right, they have 31 days to comply before their fine would be greater than all the money in the world (nominal GDP) at $107,374,182.400,000.

@grammargirl Back in my late teens I actually went through a phase of pronouncing it "hwat", really going for that "h" sound!I wouldn't have known it was Old English, and pretty sure I didn't get the idea from anywhere in particular. I just figured it added an extra spice to retorts like "hwat are you talking about?"

@webmink And with no campaigning going on to cajole folks to vote.I'd love this fact to be factored in somehow: https://mas.to/deck/@miblo/111189849026124179

Here's a thought prompted by the current General Election #petition (now at 146,689): https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/641904Wouldn't it be amazing to have some way of measuring the "strength" of decisions, so we may compare, say, this petition against the 2019 GE or even the Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act (https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2022/11/contents)?I'd like such a measure to factor in at least things like the quantity and quality of campaign material steering the decision. Raw vote count is too blunt a measure.

@stux Aye. This kind of thing just feeds into an ecosystem of "carved-out exceptions" rather than "baseline reasonable expectations upon which we all build", doesn't it?

@futurebird On this kind of thing, there was a turn of phrase that occurred to me the other day. Wish I'd written it down, but I think it was this:1994: "Are you connected to the internet?"2024: "Are you connected in the Fediverse?"

@futurebird @BrianJopek Yeah, I'd like to think the Olympics could be instructive here.Let's say Americans from across the political spectrum see USA win gold in a judged event – e.g. artistic gymnastics – and it's put to them that another country won. What are the chances that they'd all be united in saying, "no chance, we literally just watched the event play out"?And, I guess, in another event USA doesn't win, and it's put to them that they did…

@futurebird Is this "agitprop"? (I've only ever read, but never used the term myself.)

@futurebird Ah yeah, sorry. I thought it just meant general "agitating propaganda", i.e. content designed to agitate.

@futurebird Totally. I'd like to think "manufactured demand" is becoming a touchstone phrase for teens today, as "manufactured band" was for me.

@futurebird Susie Dent covered this in Dent's Modern Tribes: https://www.hachette.co.uk/titles/susie-dent/dents-modern-tribes/9781473623897/Been a while since I read it, but the general gist that's stuck with me is the idea of community cohesion, bonding insiders, and keeping outsiders out.
