Please help me settle a very silly (IMNOHO) arguement.A scale model...

@futurebird depends on the value of "scale" (is it 1:1? 40:1? ...)if it's 1:1 but doesn't preserve the proportions, then I'd argue that's not a scale model.

@futurebird Preserving proportions but usually meant scaled down, I think? At least that's how I've been using it!

@futurebird A scale model built _to scale_ is the same size as the thing. A scale model is probably smaller but without a ratio it's kind of ambiguous.

@futurebird Oh ok thanks (shouldn't it be IMNSHO then though? 🤔)

@evryway My understanding is that any model that preserves proportions is "to scale" what scale? Could be 1:1, could be larger, could be smaller. "Scaled" just means that the proportions are the same.

@futurebird miniature racing car collector here, a scale model is a perfect (1:1 in details) model, under a different (smaller) scale of the original thing. For example, Ferrari would have a Ferrari 499P that won the Le Mans 24H in 2024 in Maranello, but I could have a 1:43 scale (shrunken 43 times, detailed, albeit non functioning) model of the original, real, car.

@futurebird That is my understanding as well ;)(I was simply covering the base that the first option could be correct as long as the proportions are preserved)

@futurebird It's a model made of fish scales obviously.

@futurebird (b) can include (a), but (a) isn’t terribly useful? Even more so when you’re talking about maps rather than models.

@futurebird well, "preserves proportions" is a THing of definitions. Nor all proportions can be maintained by linear downscaling since some effects related to rotational movement or mass or updraft can not be scaled the same way...

@jakob_thoboell Ah... scaling dimensions, or scaling for function? Interesting question.

@futurebird a scale model is just a representation of how scales work. Like a toy train, but for understanding what happens when the scales fall from your eyes.

@futurebird if it was 1:1 scale I might just call it a model without the word "scale" which implies a change of size to me.

@futurebird Isn't that a model who works for the base rate negotiated by their union? Like IIRC it's around $8,000 per day for voice actors, but I don't know what it is for models.;)
