So far attempt number 2 at Fedora Workstation telemetry is a lot more sensible. An opt-out solution was never going to fly with Linux users and that 500+ comment thread shows what happens when people think a Linux distro is slightly moving towards Windows https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Metrics

It doesn't matter whether or not it's true, a lot of people on Linux reflexively respond to anything that looks like mass data surveillance and are terrified of that ever coming to Linux

@slyecho That's opt-in, you have to install the package

@BrodieOnLinux Do you believe that's possible to enforce?I could just compile my own kernel if EU or someone decides to implement some BS like Client-Side scanning. But there would be still other ways like server side or some trusted source shit like what google tried/tries to do.

@sandwich You could always swap distros, that's not really the concern. The concern is a well known distro leaning towards that route out of the box. The people most effected by Windows fuckery aren't the technical users it's those regular people who just use a computer as a tool not a hobby

@BrodieOnLinux Honestly I don't see a point of opt in telemetry. It's incredibly biased towards highly technical users that tracks what's going on the distro. Dunno if it would fly with the users but wouldn't the steam approach be more sensible one? With once in a while popup asking to share the hardware specs and other PC info that could be viewed and inspected by the user before sending them to Fedora.

@AggressiveHayBale I actually don't fully agree, I think it's biased towards the less technical users. The plan is to provide the toggle in the installation prompt which you have to select an option for before continuing. If you frame the data collection as a good thing it's easy to get the less technical users on board.

@BrodieOnLinux Hyym I see your point. But in my opinion the less technical users would stick to the default option = unchecked telemetry.

@AggressiveHayBale My understanding is there is not going a default per see, you have to actively select the answer

@BrodieOnLinux I'm just have a deep fear that automatic telemetry does this to me https://cyberplace.social/@GossiTheDog/112681961478458120

@BrodieOnLinux yes because for many of that is the/a main reason to use Linux.

@BrodieOnLinux You are right, and it's terrible. We need to get over this, because we need some data to help us make Linux a more viable alternative for more people faster, with the limited resources we have! The alternative is that everyone uses Windows/Mac and gets totally surveiled. The demand to keep Linux 100% pure from any kind of anonymous data collection just makes more people more surveiled.

@BrodieOnLinux @AggressiveHayBale I'm looking towards an active selection "choose your camp" style, because being able to passively skip such an important decision as (not) sharing telemetry would be antithetical to the goal of improving on this data. 🤔🙈

@BrodieOnLinux it’s better. They are still less trustworthy than somebody like KDE for metrics. The one change I would make is if the user on initial install says no the software is removed right then in there or there is a prompt to do so. Maybe add it to a fedora welcome or support page where it can be reinstalled easily. but as long as IBM pays the light bill, I just can’t trust them.
