I recently asked someone who has 150k+ followers on #TikTok and cross-posts to #Instagram if they would join + cross-post to #Mastodon too. They politely declined. 🙃 No reflection on that individual; but I was thinking that there isn't the incentive to post on Mastodon the same way there is on TikTok / Instagram. The algorithm actually works for "content creators". They produce content which keeps people on the platform, so the app pushes that content to people to keep them on the platform.

For 'influencers' I would say it's very important for them to own their followers off platforms like Facebook / TikTok / Instagram /etc. because you are giving a company too much control over your audience. They could decide to pull the rug from you whenever - which happens on Instagram. Friends of mine who have "brand" accounts tell me their content doesn't even reach the people following them unless they pay for a sponsored post.

Anyway, Mastodon doesn't help with any of this. There isn't the algorithm to push popular / related content to you in the same way that Insta / TikTok does. So there is no quick way to gain masses of followers. It's a slow and manual process.Mastodon doesn't really help you own your audience too because you or your server can quickly get banned by other popular servers and maybe lose a chunk of your following overnight.

@matt Maybe audiences were never meant to be owned?

@ChrisWere That is a fair point. So much of social media is "I have a thing to say and I want someone to listen" and if nobody's listening, then the platform is pointless.A lot of people are actual using it because they want to sell something. That's their money maker and requires them to retain or grow their audience.Regardless of whether you are selling or not, if nobody is listening there is no point in publishing.

@matt I think the Fedi is adjusting the play book here, hopefully in a good way. I think that's why many of the people here like it. We're rethinking the paradigm. You're right though, if no-ones listening, there's no point in talking.

@matt I assume that's also the case for people who seemed enthusiastic about posting here (especially during the initial waves from Twitter), but who have quietly gone back, or are using other sites with algorithms. Those who weren't driven off for other reasons, that is.I've often thought this of YouTube, specifically people who quit jobs for it. Your livelihood is in Google's hands. I'm sure it's fine when fine, but it must get really stressful, ensuring engagement.

@tehstu @matt its the same as any "creative industry" but with way more uncertainty, I suspect the bottom will fall out of it sooner or later and folk will end up having to go "back to the day job" (which hopefully hasn't been eliminated by AI or outsourcing!). I saw the exact same happen IRL with the rave subculture from the 1990s-2000s (it got clamped down on as it was being at least half funded by laundered drugs money, with adverse effects on health/social care services across Europe)

@vfrmedia I love that you just compared a bunch of kids posting online to 90s rave subculture.😃 @tehstu

@matt @vfrmedia @tehstu Laundering money through the Fedi isn't actually the worst idea in the world.Come the class war, we should keep this one in our back pocket.

@ChrisWere@mattThe fedi money laundering pipeline: nobody knows how much it costs to actually host a mastodon instance, some say it costs $500,000 a month in donations from benevolent users!

@matt @jonny We gotta get ourselves one of those Russian oligarchs to throw some cash here.If they can buy up half the property in London, they could probably find a few billion down the back of the sofa.
