So it turns out our participation in the choral championship had a participation prize of $500. All money the choir gets goes to our twin parish in Emerton. They run the Ignite food store which is a small supermarket that sells donated goods and good purchased with donations at like 90% off, so each song we sing means a family doesn’t have to choose between rent and dinner. Fucking result. Choir master was approached after the championships with an offer that we sing as an ensemble choir in a play that’s on in December. It’s a paid gig! Our first one! So more supplies for Mt. Druitt in a cost of living crisis approaching Christmas.

The Ignite store started up I think about 5 years ago with just a premises they can use. They now have a truck, a minibus, a cool store, and it looks like a year or two ago they got ahold of a small plot of land which is now an orchard. So they can grow peaches and sell/give away those.

They run at 0 profit, with any money they make going on paying staff, so as well as feeding the community it provides jobs.

It's probably important to note here that running at 0 profit is not being "nonprofit" - nonprofits make profit all the time, it's just not their intention or aim. Ignite deliberately makes no profit at all, funnelling every dime back into the feeding and employing people.

@daedalus I have a fantastic term for what it's called when a community comes together and runs an enterprise using the resources of those that have, for the benefit of those who don't have, but the rather conservative bloke at church who I don't talk to much doesn't like me talking like that.

@daedalus oh he is, that's why he doesn't like me talking like that. If we were to live our lives exactly the way Christ described we'd give up everything we have. People who have things they don't want to give up generally mumble about this.

@daedalus faith is entirely, for everyone, a matter of negotiating with your own beliefs. At it's very base, it's believing in a God there is scant or no evidence for, then you scale the whole theology into being a member of a church with the history it has, and a deity that demands things of you that you don't want to do.

@daedalus so on the assumption we don't all sell everything we own, donate it to the poor and enter an impoverished life of service, what the measure of a person is, is a matter for them. I choose to like the helping people out bit. Others get annoyed by it.
