Here is the uncomfortable truth about adblocking, yes there will always be a small subset of people who do it but as you put more hurdles in front of people less and less people will do it, this June my ad rates are at least 10% higher than they normally would be and this is with a Linux audience. Google's goal isn't to stop adblocking it's to convince you that adblocking is too much of a challenge to be worth it so that you stop using it willingly, in other words, boil the frog.

You might ask why boil the frog instead of instantly breaking things, I propose 2 explanations:1. Breaking things that badly is really difficult to ensure success2. If you piss people off slowly they are a lot less likely to want to group up and protest the change you made

@BrodieOnLinux For me it's simple. If they cross the line, i will simply learn how to live without youtube. Like i learned to live without facebook and other platforms that people consume. I will switch to blogs, here on mastodon there's a lot of interesting people ... and they are great, and have value too. Actually i have great success with deleting accounts i no longer use, or don't want. IDK what excel spreadsheet says in #google but i'm not part of good result.

@BrodieOnLinux as long as Libretube still works, I'm using Libretube.

@BrodieOnLinux I feel like that they kind of fuck them self if they keep increasing ads and anti adblocker measures at the same time. They drive attention to Adblockers and Sponsorblock with their behavior so unless they actually manage to continuously make it harder to block ads they will end up with more people using Adblockers! Yes, things like the embedded ads are a temporary solution but as soon as someone starts to properly utilize AI it won't stand a chance ether!

@BrodieOnLinux I wish that ads would be fundamentally fixed before they're forced upon us.I actually like finding out about shit relevant to my interests, but I'd like to straight up tell youtube "give me ads on this topic and show them to me X number of times before moving onto the next" instead of them trying to underhandedly data harvest me to find this information out. Also, the repetition sucks. 3-5 times for 1 15 second ad is fair, anything beyond that is psychological torture.

@BrodieOnLinux seeing YouTube enshitifying more and more, I feel like going through each YouTube channel that interest me and asking them if they would like to open an official PeerTube channel, even in the form of YouTube mirror. What do you think about PeerTube? Might it be interesting for you?

@BrodieOnLinux honestly, I don’t really get the outrage at google doing this. If you get value or if a service (like YouTube) then you should pay for it. I have an adblocker, but I would never know about any of this because I disable it for stuff I use a bunch, like YouTube. If I didn’t pay YouTube money or watch their ads, then they have literally zero obligation to me. I know stuff that used to be possible being taken away sucks, but like it or not, watching ads is the payment for YouTube.

@BrodieOnLinux fair, so far I haven't faced any difficulty with an adblocker yet but that is because YT is slow by a few years to give my country the latest "features", like up until 2 years ago we could download vids at 1080p for free on mobile
