Hey, can anyone recommend a quickstart guide for digital/electronic music production in a linux environment? I don't know shit about shit, but I'd like to do some sampling and some bleep blorps.

@ajroach42 I don't do much work on Linux, but I'd recommend looking in to Bitwig or Reaper, both cross-platform DAWs with solid followings and cross-platform support. One is more of an Ableton like (Bitwig was founded by ex Ableton people) while the other is more analogous to a ProTools.

@deadsuperhero I have ubuntu studio, LMMS and Ardour, but I'm out of my depth on getting started with them. I'm looking for tips on using the software more than I am for software recommendations.

@bipolaron We use Ubuntu Studio in our computer lab to manage our video production machines. It's pretty great.

@ajroach42 @bipolaron found this guy on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Fphlu5p2qLgLooks to be exactly what you're asking about. Can't vouch for the quality but at least it's on topic for what you're after.

@ajroach42 Not sure about the quickstart, don't know of one -- but for sampling, you could do worse than creating some samples (public domain voice recordings is a good place to start, try librivox over on archive.org) and feeding them through VCV sampler modules. (Cardinal at present doesn't have much in the way of sampling modules, save for Nysthi ones.)Biggest learning curve there is VCV itself, if you already know your way around Audacity.

@poiseunderchaos so like, I did some work on citizen DJ, and I pulled those clips in to ardor and I made a song, but I never knew what I was doing, I was just doing stuff. I want to know what I'm doing.

@ajroach42 Here's a VCV patch for basic sampling. There's a fair amount of information hidden behind the individual modules, but the patching itself is not that hard to pick up, once you know the interface.

@ajroach42 DAWs can take a while to learn, if not being an ongoing process -- but the basic concept is based off of multitrack tape decks: hook up things that make audio, record those things, save the result to disk. Some of the terms are different: recording and saving are two separate processes, typically, and saving is called "bouncing" or similar terms rather than "saving" or "recording", to lessen confusion between states and/or resulting output.

@ajroach42 Also, note that sampling can be done with both DAWs and audio recording software such as Audacity or Ardour. It's just that using a program such as VCV allows more options when it comes to doing things with the sample once recorded or loaded.I'm not that familiar with LMMS, but given its design, my guess is that it may have some sample chopping or glitching capabilities. I'll check.

@ajroach42 https://docs.lmms.io/user-manual/5-built-in-instruments/5.1-audiofileprocessorDocumentation says that there's a slicer (a tool that chops up samples into sections), but not finding it yet. Here's a quick introduction to LMMS:https://docs.lmms.io/user-manual/4-production/4.6-your-first-song-with-lmms#4.6.3-good-song-bad-result.

@ajroach42 I haven't used this, but here's a sample slicer plugin that should work in LMMS:https://github.com/clearly-broken-software/ninjas2Start with the LV2 version; if that doesn't work, try the VST2 one.

@ajroach42 Does it need to be strictly FOSS? Bitwig and Reaper are the best feature wise but not FOSS, great native support though and amazing DAWs. Ardour is FOSS and good. VCV rack, Cardinal, Surge XT and Vital are some kick ass synths

@ajroach42 You can find my video "Ardour Quickstart Guide" and "Absokite Basixs of Sound Sy thesis" on YT / PT.Just add "unfa" to the search query and they should pop up.I also have an excellent community focused on music production on Linux (with FOSS, but we also have a corner for non-FOSS stuff)https://chat.unfa.xyz
