The time genie will bring back one (1) extinct animal from any time in all of earth's history. The animal will be integrated into a subtitle ecosystem seamlessly with no major negative consequences. You get to pick the creature. Do you feel obligated to pick something like a sauropod just so people can experience the awe?Do you bring back something more recent to correct the crimes of mankind?Or are you selfish and you ask for hell ants so you can finally see how their mandibles work?

I also find Conuropsis carolinensis, the Carolina parakeet very tempting because I think if we had parrots in the US, native parrots ... if we had another shot at saving them it might make us all better people? But that's also a long shot and I might be setting myself up for heartache again.

@futurebird Southern England has a growing population of feral parakeets - nobody knows where they came from, but almost certainly released/escaped pets, hence calling them feral rather than "actually" wild. But the population is in the tens of thousands now. They're fun (and loud), but they're starting to become a potential issue for native birds here. Here are two in my local park in London during winter (excuse the horrible camera)Wikipedia has more:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feral_parakeets_in_Great_Britain

@futurebirdNow that I have been reading this thread for a while I feel compelled to say, what motivates the time genie? Can we bribe or coerce it? Can it bring back whole planet Earths and integrate them seamlessly into the solar system? Messing around with Newtonian mechanics would seem to be within its powers if it can integrate, say, sauropods seamlessly.

@futurebird I would have a hard time deciding.Arthropleura comes to mind because it's such a strange creature, so much larger than today's millipedes, that I'd like to know how it would be made to fit into today's ecosystems.a Sauropod, yes, because they're big, but even more so: relatively little is known of sauropod ecology, and I'd like to know how such huge animals could fit into the highly constrained (by human activities) ecosystems of today. And so many other tempting options.

@futurebird I want to bring back something from Australia's "megafauna" era, like the Diprotodon (rhino-sized marsupial) or the Procoptodon (10' tall kangaroo) or even the giant koala. One of the most interesting facts in Harari's Sapiens was of the 20+ Australian species of magafauna, only 1 survived contact with humans.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_megafauna

@futurebird 1/2somehow, the part about making it fit in with modern ecosystems reminds me of Paul Martin and his notion of "Pleistocene re-wilding", which included introducing elephants and rhinos into the N. American great plains. He believed modern ecosystems needed these animals to function properly. But even in the 1970s when he started advocating it, there was little prairie left.

@futurebird I vote for one of the extinct megafauna responsible for dispersing various fruits in North America that suffer from "megafaunal dispersal syndrome", such as paw paws, Osage orange, avocados, etc. I understand that we're not sure which of these fruits actually relied on mammoths, giant ground sloths, etc. for dispersal, so I would like the genie to figure it out and then pop the most helpful animal back into the landscape, so these plants aren't dependent on humans for propagation.

@futurebird There are (non-native) monk parakeets in Austin, TX, and the electric company has a special protocol for removing their nests from power lines without harming the birds. (Supposedly parakeet nests on power lines tend to catch fire if not removed.)Iβm actually not sure whether Iβve seen the monk parakeets, but one time a stray budgie came to my apartment building and spent a couple days tearing up the wooden siding and trim. π
