@mcc @futurebird I'm pretty sure you just described OONI Probe: https://ooni.org/You can run it on your phone and it tries to smell censorship by attempting to reach various websites and services, checking for availability and slowdowns. Obviously be careful if you're in a place where simply visiting a website about e.g. trans people could get you in trouble.

OK nerds, what's the best email client on Linux?I'm interested in both GUI and terminal email clients. I consider them to be in separate categories, not competing with one another.Until recently I've just been using Gmail webmail + official clients because I'm a creature of habit, but I'm trying to transition away from Google. Currently experimenting with Migadu for email hosting.EDIT: My goal is self-hosting, so no Proton or Tuta. (Also encrypted email is a bad idea.)#email #linux

20 years from now you still live in the same place, but post-apocalypse.You can't believe it's come to this, but you're standing in a battle line with your neighbors to repel raiders. The raiders are milling about, they didn't expect this much resistance, and you see no reason to let them get organized... so as a respected elder, you heft your weapon forged from car parts and lead the charge! What's your battle cry? What do you scream as you rush to die for your community?

I have to say that I've never read a battle cry in a fantasy or sci-fi novel that I could take seriously. I'd be embarrassed to scream them for fun, let alone as my potential last words.Did real world warriors sound dorky as hell in battle? Are there any historical battle cries that had teeth, or do they sound as weak as their fictional counterparts? Is it a case of "you had to be there"?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_cry

@floatybirb @futurebird The most productive ants did not receive the most alcohol, they got 15% alcohol and there were ants getting 20% alcohol, if I've understood correctly.

@futurebird Would it be bad to run a tiny train for the public on these tracks, if not everyone could fit? I guess many amusement park rides like roller coasters are not accessible to everyone, but they are still enjoyed by those who can ride.Maybe in the future there will be less fossil fuel traffic and breathing tunnel air will be less concerning.Maybe getting people on a tiny train could help us reach that future.

My Gmail is unusable. It's all marketing emails, donation asks, and possible scams. It's necessary to log in to endless accounts that I've built up over decades, but that's exactly the problem, every service I've ever signed up for wants to send me automated emails.I kind of just want to delete it, but I'd lose access to most of my online life, and if I ever order anything online again, the process will just start over again. If I ignore it, I might miss a crucial #email alert. What to do?

@futurebird Could go for Krita instead. Not sure why Krita doesn't get more attention, frankly. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krita

This ant is on a hazardous quest, with the fate of the world in her mandibles! You can tell by the heroic lighting and lens flare.Paging @futurebird:inaturalist: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/272377168#ants #insects

@hugh According to one dev for GoToSocial:"Implementing the C2S API is, I'm afraid, really out of the question, as it's totally underdefined, relies on the client to do almost everything, and would be an absolute nightmare project for us. That's a non-starter."https://codeberg.org/superseriousbusiness/gotosocial/issues/3846#issuecomment-4018586

@futurebird Maybe a hobby that has the potential to be very expensive, but which is nice and relatable for nerds?Maybe he loves model trains and dreams of a huge train installation, or he loves orchids and wants a big greenhouse for them, or he genuinely loves sailing on the ocean (and all of the sailing skills like knots) and not just the conspicuous consumption of a yacht.

Time to discuss self-hosted alternatives to GitHub!First, has anyone simply put a bare git repo on a server somewhere, pushed via SSH, and called it a day?https://idiomdrottning.org/hosting-git-reposDo you really need more than a remote to push to and pull from, for your personal projects? If you've tried this, what obstacles did you encounter and what features did you miss?#GiveUpGitHub #SelfHosting #git #SSH #BareRepos

Next, have you tried a static site generator for browsing git repos? Here's a list of SSGs for git, sorted by latest commit (fresh to stale):* reporat https://www.ratfactor.com/repos/reporat/* git-arr https://blitiri.com.ar/p/git-arr/* depp https://git.8pit.net/depp/* itsy-gitsy https://git.trevorbentley.com/itsy-gitsy/file/README.md* pgit https://pgit.pico.sh/* stagit https://codemadness.org/git/stagit/file/README.html* gituwa https://git.mcksp.com/gituwa/* repo2html https://git.m455.casa/repo2html/#GiveUpGitHub #git #SelfHosting #SSGs #StaticWebsites #StaticSiteGenerators

To avoid self-hosting a full-fledged code forge, you might want to simply store issues in the git repo itself. Have you tried using git-bug, git-issue, or some other decentralized bug tracker?* https://github.com/git-bug/git-bug* https://github.com/dspinellis/git-issueLast time I tried git-bug I failed to import my issues from GitHub and gave up, but maybe it works now, it seems there is a new & more active maintainer.#GiveUpGitHub #git #BugTracking #issues #SelfHosting #GitBug

If you're worried about hosting anything on the open web because fucking crawlers for LLMs are overloading indie websites, maybe you'd rather browse your git repo via SSH:https://github.com/charmbracelet/soft-serveHave you used Soft Serve? Are you aware of any similar projects for browsing git repos over SSH?Big caveats:* Charm (the company behind it) has taken VC funding, and therefore is probably doomed* Last VC round was lead by "Gradient, Google’s AI-focused venture fund". They're all-in on AI bullshit

Finally, if you really need a full code forge, with issue tracking and everything, what is the simplest, most light-weight code forge you can self-host?Is it Forgejo? "Lightweight: Forgejo can easily be hosted on nearly every machine. Running on a Raspberry? Small cloud instance? No problem!" https://codeberg.org/forgejo/forgejoThat sounds great to me, but is Forgejo simple enough that I won't regret taking on the maintenance burden? Is there something even faster?#GiveUpGitHub #git #SelfHosting

I just decided to listen to music on my old Pixel 5a (running GrapheneOS) and, holy crap, it was a relief to just plug in to the headphone jack, instead of hunting for a dongle and having it awkwardly dangle, or worrying if Bluetooth headphones were charged or trying to pair them. In a split second I had high quality audio.I had accepted the loss of the headphone jack on my new phone, but I really want it back now.

@futurebird @quinn Interestingly, my best friend from grade school married someone who was college roommates with my now wife, so theoretically, I could have met my wife though his wife. But we both met our partners on OK Cupid (when it sucked less), so if that website didn't exist, that connection would have also been impossible. We were all attending another grade school friend's wedding, when my partner introduced herself, and his partner said, "I know you!" My partner didn't recognize her.
