I wanna see a 3d printer designed by woz.No limit switches, it just bangs the print head against the casing on boot up like an apple II drive

@foone I think that's what the Prusa 3, or at least the MMU, does

@foone does sensorless homing count as a limit switch?

@foone I can imagine how the build plate would look like...

@foone You can just remove/disconnect/destroy those switches. Often the firmware will assume the head must have gotten there after a while and continue.I can say from experience that even the first Ultimaker had that fallback behaviour and that it sounds horrible.

@foone Mine does that if one of the limit switch wires has worked loose *again* - the firmware even knows it's happened but carries on anyway! I can't recommend it as an approach...

@foone why use limit switches when you can just monitor the amp draw from the stepper motors trying to rotate the entire bolted frame of the printer around itself

@foone My Sovol SV06 does that on its X axis. Just thumps it against one end when homing. Actually works quite well.

@foone @leyrer this actually exists. it's called sensorless homing and works by measuring the motor current.

@foone Prusa does this for ages now, instead of limit switches it uses the current sensing it already has for collision detection instead of limit switches.Works a charm and is super preciseSo its not WOZ/Commodore style head banging, but very close to.

@foone I've experienced this on a printer before. The sound it makes is horrifying.
