@judgedread The whole hating Mondays thing feels like a relic from another era since most businesses nowadays are open on the weekends now anyway. Why hate Mondays when the work week starts on a Sunday or Saturday?

@Appalachian_Crusader Why hate Mondays when you hate your owner and he's away leaving the way clear to raid the icebox for succulent lasagna?

@AmonMaritza Garfield is the Adam Sandler of cartoons.

@judgedread @AmonMaritza I read a while ago that Jim Davis wrote Garfield as a money grab, openly as merchandisable as possible. Arguably the opposite of Bill Watterson.

@oldgreentruck Jim Davis had one great idea - that a sympathetic cat had never been the main character. Sylvester is Tweety's bane. Cartoon cats always got stuck with the Tom & Jerry / Itchy & Scratchy role as straight cat and fall guy, or they were totally anthropomorphic as in Top Cat or the Aristocats. Davis made a cat along the lines of Snoopy, where he existed as a pet and communicated via thought balloons. That he was entirely cynical is proven by the fact he quit drawing it himself the moment he could afford a ghost artist. Pretty sure he doesn't even write it.

@judgedread Garfield hates mondays because he had to appeal to the most basic and universal American audience at the time. Garfield is the male equivalent of Kathy. Retarded but competently made and universal enough in sentiment to conquer the industry of that era.

@BigChadMungus No doubt, but the in-universe logic is lacking.

@judgedread I'll give him that much, he accomplished exactly what he set out to do. Lowest common denominator humor with a cat apparently killed it. Supposedly he still does some writing, but his main focus is on the merchandise side of things, now.
