Academics are still on Twitter, unfortunately. Many of the ones who tried the fediverse gave up fairly quickly (exactly what happened with journalists). Here's a study worth reading, for lessons that Mastodon advocates should heed: https://arxiv.org/abs/2406.04005

@dangillmor In general, most people are very reluctant to put forth the effort to adapt; to this, or most anything. Yes it is effort, but the gain is deemed too uncertain and too far into the future. I think this is large bullshit but that's what I've got for push back. Meanwhile all us frogs feel the water getting warmer.

@dangillmor I'm honestly still trying to find Mastodon's "steep learning curve" that is referenced in the article. The main difference seems to me to be the belief that a Twitter post will be widely circulated to those who are interested, via the algorithm, while in Mastodon it will be circulated to followers. But I feel this faith in the algorithm is misplaced, as distribution is interrupted by marketing and, increasingly, bots and political content, reducing a post's actual reach.

@DownesI find your lack of faith in The Algorithm disturbing.[Breathes heavily and makes pinching gesture]@dangillmor @lightweight
