Normally I take the bus. It takes 40min, but since it’s rush hour it would take 65min. So, I’m walking to the subway. When my leg was injured I’d have no choice but to be late — the subway is too far and too many stations aren’t accessible. The major avenues into the city are like parking lots. Millions of New Yorkers leave hours early to avoid rush hour. My work is less than 3 miles away but it might as well be on another planet. If not congestion pricing the WHAT will ya’ll do?

@futurebird I, with working legs and lungs, would bike it. 3 urban miles is 15-20 minutes, depending. Apparently the plan for everyone else is "sucks to be you". Clearly what we need is a bunch of "entitled cyclists for Hochul" praising her congestion tax decision.

@futurebird Though this also gets into the question of how much independence should cities have from the state?Because NYC needed to state to approve this measure and not do it on their own.

@futurebird I know you're not looking for individual advice, but... if your work is 3 mi away, could you possibly get an electric bike and ride on the sidewalk?

@futurebird The eligibility rules for free transport to the nearest school in England are basically the same now as they were in the 1970's when I used the school bus. They are based on walking distance:2 miles or more if under 8 years old3 miles or more if aged 8 to 16If enough of you insisted on walking to work, loudly, would that help make the argument for change and be listened to?

@futurebird I live in Santiago and have been riding around 4 miles to work for a long time. It takes me around 20min and makes happy.I’ve seen that New York has being doing a good effort on bike infrastructure too.Consider testing how difficult/dangerous it is to bike to work, how much time it takes you and the options to park your bike (the buildings here have bike parking). A good way is to go on a weekend, maybe early on Sunday.https://youtu.be/5PoKcQRlDGs?feature=shared

@unlucio It’s because we all think the rest of us will one day recognize how important and special each one of us is.

@unlucio Think of it this way: all the big heads are kept in one place like this, it’s safer for everyone else. The city’s anthem is literally about how hard it is but god dammit they are going to *see* me someday.

@futurebird best I can tell the plan is to cancel or super slow down a bunch of maintenance and improvements and raise local payroll taxes to cover the minimum required to prevent complete system collapse. It’s very political!

@futurebird I'm not sure I understand, it sounds like a line from a cheap musical about someone spending their life waiting for a "breakthrough" and it never happens.Every time I got offered a job in NYC I turned it down for 2 main reasons:- the USA doesn't have a healthcare system- I'm not going to pay 4k/mo to live in a shower. It's a pretty roomy planet, plenty of options besides NYC

@futurebird NYC is hardly the center of the universe. If NYC feels like the center of your universe, may I suggest you expand your horizons? :)Considering how the expansion works the center of the universe should have plenty of space, so no reason to sacrifice decent living space.

@icastico @unlucio I totally agree. And when you find your little place in NYC it fits like a glove. The particular thing you care about is a thing it’s a whole universe— idk if that makes sense but i always felt so isolated in smaller cities.

@futurebird We have the same problem in London, over both congestion pricing and another fee intended to address the city's dangerously poor air quality. People who live near the zones are broadly in favor, because they like clean air... but people who live in the zones or commute into them, and thus would have to pay the fee, are OUTRAGED about this infringement on their freedom of travel. It's reached the point where vigilantes with angle grinders are destroying cameras at night.
