People whose electoral politics is the same as mine seem very excited to share Figure 7, but they seem less often to share Figure 5.Both from the same source, the Fed's Report on the Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households in 2023 - May 2024 https://www.federalreserve.gov/publications/2024-economic-well-being-of-us-households-in-2023-overall-financial-well-being.htm#economics #finance

@interfluidity I know it is not your point but given that what, 25% of Americans have $0 in savings or less - net of their home value if they have one (usually unlikely at that end of the scale) it's actually pretty good that more than 70% think their personal finances are "at least okay".I assume the point you're making is people think the local and national economy is much worse under Biden (Fox-washed thinking) but their own situation is about they same?

@enmodo That's the point people who share my electoral politics typically make. I think it's wrong. I think this is in fact a pretty rough economy for most people, and that affluent professional-class liberals are letting their own good fortune and a very selective reading of "data" and "evidence" write discontent off just as "foxwashing".

@interfluidity But if we take their subjective opinion into consideration the majority - over 2/3rds - think they are doing at least okay. The discontent doesn't seem to jibe with their own assessment of the economy as a whole. It starts to sound like when 8 out of 10 men claim they are above average drivers. While it's technically possible, statistically it's unlikely. Also if the % saying they are worse of under Biden almost tripled why did the "a least okay" percent barely move?

@enmodo one can be worse but still “ok”. saying “not ok” may just be not something people are eager to do. if you ask me how i am and i say “ok”, that often means pretty bad but i don’t want to whine to you.

@interfluidity agreed - I did eventually make that point. As Dr House say "everybody lies" which is why we should use objective measures. Also while apparently 3/4 of Americans have traveled to another country (probably biased by a lot of Canada and Mexico side trips) I'm guessing very few who were born here have ever lived in another country. So very few have any idea of our living standards and quality of life relative to other countries - other than what they are told to believe "USA #1!"
