Today I learned about the traditional English "Lamb's Tail Pie," which is made of the tails cut off lambs for hygienic reasons: http://www.foodsofengland.co.uk/lambstailpie.htmIt's amazing how a single fact can remind you how poor life used to be. Though, probably today you could sell it as a delicacy.

@ZachWeinersmith I remember fighting with my brother for the pig's tail when we were kids.

@ZachWeinersmith Reminds me of my neighbour, a vet, who would castrate male calves and immediately throw the spare parts to his dogs, who would gobble them down in front of them.

@ZachWeinersmith same for cockchafer soup! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockchafer_soup about 30 bugs per serving. The German wikipedia article talks about raw cockchafer bugs being a popular student snack from an 1844 quote.Especially interesting now that insect protein is coming back

@ZachWeinersmith Hm, this immediately made me think of oxtail soup, though nothing I read said anything about poverty, and in fact it seems to be considered a delicacy.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxtail_soup

@ZachWeinersmith You say "poor" when I think you mean "resourceful". Too many of our sensibilities are handed down to us from on high by people who work hard to separate themselves from "commoners". As if those people on high - lazy, shiftless, gold brickers who, by dint of luck of birth, believe they have a right to tell everyone else how to live as they exploit them to support their lavish lifestyles - have any taste or idea of what is good at all.
