Developers should be forced to use 10 year old hardware as daily drivers

@volpeon@is-a.wyvern.rip My work PC is 8 years old. However, it actually has a workstation Xeon CPU and 32 GiB of memory so it's still faster than a lot of consumer computers being sold today.

@volpeon I think this is more of an issue with executives demanding shiny software very quick that runs on whatever 5000€ computer they have rather than demanding software that will run on 10+ years old hardware

@lunareclipse@snug.moe Higher-ups wanting quick results may be part of the problem, but I think programmers also easily lose sight of their code's performance because they usually have high-end hardware that obfuscates these problems.

@volpeon and of course it needs a redesign every 3 months to have a visible thing to show to investors rather than improving whatever features they already have

@volpeon@is-a.wyvern.rip My first thought was "that'd be terrible", but then I remembered how old my computer is and yeah...

@volpeon I've run across an instance where a developer intentionally used a decade-old computer and optimised their stuff for it, and it later turned out that their stuff ran perfectly on that generation of hardware, but was painfully and unexplainably slow on anything remotely fresh.Maybe it's not as straightforward as we think.

@aks @volpeon That only means we should optimize the toolchains too :02lurk:
