Rare opportunity to reply with software!Thinking about writing up some usage of esoteric/under appreciated operating systems.- Please do suggest some that will run on either: a standard amd64 PC or a Raspberry Pi 4. Not interested in virtual machines.- Please do not suggest: Windows, macOS, Ubuntu/Debian/Fedora Linux or things based on them (like Kubuntu, or Linux Mint)Please boost this so I can get lots of good replies.

@mattl I think Genode / Sculpt OS https://genode.org/index should be able to run on regular hardware, at least somewhat.HelenOS http://www.helenos.org/ should also be able to run, but I am not sure about support for GPUs.An extra challenge would be to run Fuchsia https://fuchsia.dev/, but I have absolutely zero idea on how to even build it from source (and didn't find a pre-built image). These are what I would consider esoteric, meaning that I would have a quite hard time trying to use them. Then there is the easy stuff like Free/Open/Net/DragonflyBSD, which probably run and give a POSIX environment, but where is the fun with those :-)(Disclaimer: A long time ago I tried running Sculpt OS and HelenOS in a VM, I don't really know whether they run on common hardware. But they either run or don't, probably, so it's at least failing fast :-D)

Suggestions so far:* Plan9* ReactOS* HaikuOS* TempleOS* OS/2 (see another post about $150 for the license)* WebOSSerenityOS can't run on real hardware yet, so isn't in the list. Hyprland was suggested but is more of a GUI.

Okay, Haiku won't boot. Just hangs on the boot logo or reboots immediately.ReactOS does something similar.Maybe this system76 machine is a bit exotic? I don't think its especially weird.

9front is indeed a plan9 fork; we built a 64-bit stack, various wifi drivers, efi support, and a ton of other stuff. If you run into trouble please do let me know, or complain in #cat-v on irc.oftc.net. There's a mailing list as well: email the word 'subscribe' to 9front-owner@9front.org to get in on that.

@khm by any chance does it support OpenGL or Vulkan? software rasterization like llvmpipe would be fine :3

no, it would require a massive rewrite of the graphics stack for that to be feasible. there is very minimal framebuffer accel and no kernel infrastructure that I'm aware of for taking advantage of current 3d accelerators.
