       Heat pumps and induction ranges are two strong examples of products that are better environmentally *and* better products than their gas/oil competitors, for almost everybody. (EVs will get there, but they’re not there yet.)Because carbon emissions are free, it’s important that low-emission new products be clearly better than the polluting status quo. It’s a high bar, it’s not fair, but I’m glad we have heat pumps and induction ranges as a model.

       My mentions are now filling up with people who would like me to know that EVs are better for them. That’s swell. They’re better for me too. But they are not actually better than ICE vehicles for most people, largely due to the challenges of charging if you can’t charge at home.We EV evangelists do nobody any favors by pretending that they’re almost always better than ICE vehicles for most people. They’re not! They will be soon, as charging infrastructure rapidly improves. But not now.

       @waldoj EVs are worse because they're (not necessarily but in practice) IoT spyware devices, way too massive to be safe, and an order of magnitude too expensive.

       @dalias@hachyderm.io @waldoj@mastodon.social not to mention that they’re a waste of lithium. Most of their worth is the battery pack alone and nothing else. It’s a struggle of energy density. Maybe if we didn’t focus so much on requiring everyone to own a personal vehicle… I mean it used to be that the family only had one car. Modern families pretty much expect everyone to have a car. Two car garage? Yeah that’s only you and your significant other’s car not to mention your kids (if you have any).

       @puppygirlhornypost @waldoj That's the same thing as the mass problem in some sense. If they were more reasonably designed, inspired by velomobiles, you'd be powering them off beefed up phone charging power banks not literal tons of batteries.

       @nlpbot They’re not. I own two EVs, zero ICE vehicles, and bought my first EV in 2018. The charging infrastructure and charging experience make them inappropriate for a huge swath of Americans, e.g. almost anybody who lives in an apartment.

       @waldoj @nlpbot With respect, I disagree. I'm old, drove ICE cars for decades. Have driven an EV for 5 years, would never consider going back.  On the charging infrastructure you have a point - if you're the person who regularly travels 1000 km to random destinations, much is still missing. (I'm not that kind of person.) On the other hand, with an L2 charger at home, the cost and annoyance savings of never visiting a gas station is massive.

       @timbray @waldoj @nlpbot An L2 is $1,250 from a reliable electrical contractor in Seattle including permits and parts. Our utility offers a $400 rebate. We may split with neighbor! We had a ~$15K electrical upgrade that made this possible…

       @glennf @waldoj @nlpbot For those of us with the undeserved good fortune to have a property including a parking spot, the economics of L2 are a complete no-brainer. One of the biggest EV obstacles is people in condos with a regressive HOA, and even with a good HOA some condos have architecture issues that make the cost horribly high.  I think there’s an opening for some tech innovation there?

       @glennf @timbray @waldoj @nlpbot Private cars are the least efficient, most expensive (for the owners and the public) way to move people or goods in almost any city of appreciable size and EVs do not change that. Accepting EVs as a replacement for ICE cars seems... counterproductive.
