The Trump campaign can apparently say literally anything in response to a media inquiry and the outlet will dutifully report that the reporter was instructed to fuck themselves or whatever. It’s really bizarre. https://wapo.st/46m0GX8

Based on all available evidence, Egypt gave Trump $10 million in cash a few days before his 2017 inauguration (that’s 200 pounds of $100 bills). The FBI and DOJ started investigating this in 2019, but attorney general Bill Barr shut that down. Trump then changed US policy in Egypt’s favor.Note that Sen. Bob Menendez was just convicted of likewise taking bribes from Egypt. This is their MO. https://wapo.st/3SxAkvO

Starting today, Cloudflare has enabled Brotli compression for all sites, with no way for turn it off except on enterprise accounts. The version of cURL that updown.io uses doesn't support Brotli. Now updown.io is useless for monitoring Cloudflare sites, because it constantly complains about an unrecognized content encoding type ("br”). 😫If you, too, are being told that your Cloudflare-fronted sites are down, this is why.

@vriska The CDC doesn’t provide data for American Samoa or CNMI. There’s nothing my bot can do about that.

@vriska I don’t want to say there’s no data, because that would be wrong. The CDC reports no data, but that doesn’t mean there’s no data. The CHC dashboard hasn’t been updated in a long while, but it’s possible they’re reporting it in some other place that I don’t know about. The Saipan Tribune used to report numbers, but I haven’t read that regularly for a couple of years.

Every 3.5" USB floppy drive I can find looks like sketchy garbage. I buy a new one every 5 years, and it works for, like, 10 disks, and then it does. Can anybody recommend one that isn't trash?

A climate scientist wanted to test if wood, buried in the right soil, could avoid decomposition, thus sequestering the carbon. They found the right soil, dug the hole to dump the wood in, and found a chunk of an eastern red cedar 6½ feet underground. Carbon dating found it to be 3,775 years old, with 95% of its original carbon content. So...yes,, you *can* bury wood to sequester carbon. https://wapo.st/3zpkWLL

Plastic recycling is a myth created and propped up by the petroleum industry. https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/texas-resident-used-apple-airtags-to-discover-plastics-taken-to-houston-recycling-centers-arent-being-recycled

Before anybody gets all up in my mentions: yes, it is hypothetically possible to recycle some types of plastic and yes, there is a small-scale PET recycling industry, but recycling plastics at scale is infeasible and has no path to feasibility.

I’m muting this thread because it has achieved escape velocity, resulting in a bunch of replies like “here in Kerblekistan we have achieved a 16% PET recycling rate through exploiting the Malaysian immigrant underclass so therefore plastic recycling works great.” 🙄I leave you with this video on the topic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fiu9GSOmt8E

The Biden administration is cracking down on the petroleum industry’s bullshit claims of plastic recycling. The EPA now requires that “made from X% recycled plastic” claims be calculated based on mass, instead of vibes. Expect those percentages to drop precipitously, to something closer to 0%. https://www.propublica.org/article/epa-rejects-mass-balance-plastics-recycling-safer-choice

Kudos to ProPublica who exposed the nonsense of this Potemkin plastic recycling process back in June. It’s green-washing by ExxonMobil, which says they turn plastic back into oil, which can be used to make plastic again. But the process actually works terribly, with a 2–5% yield. Worse, the industry uses mathematical trickery known as “lying” to label that as e.g. 30% recycled, or even 100%.Plastic recycling: it’s as good as clean coal! https://www.propublica.org/article/delusion-advanced-chemical-plastic-recycling-pyrolysis

One area where post-consumer plastic recycling is actually happening is black plastic, such as for kitchen utensils and takeout containers. They're made from recycled electronics products, flame-retardants and all. A supermajority of tested spatulas and sushi trays children's toys contained cancer-causing levels of flame retardants that are banned in the U.S.Plastic recycling: On the rare occasion where it’s not a myth, it is bad! https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/01/health/flame-retardant-black-plastic-wellness/index.html

I got a letter from a company I’ve never heard of informing me of a “privacy event,” a new and stupid euphemism for “we collected your data and allowed it to be stolen.” The letter never says that the company is, in fact, United Healthcare.

It turns out to be a pathetic scam. The URL leads you to a form that demands your credit card info, without any explanation as to what you’d be paying for or how much.

@futurebird This Mastodon scam was particularly ham-fisted, but the phone call you got is a good reminder that absolutely none of us are un-scammable. The U.S. is a scam culture—we are subjected to constant scams. We can't dodge them all. Eventually I'm gonna get got, and I hope I'll have the nerve to call it up publicly.
