yesterday I crashed pretty hard energy-wise. I've been pushing, trying to get a lot done on multiple fronts, and my body finally called me on it and knocked me back into sleep mid-day to try and recharge a bit.still tired even after my nap, I decided to listen and go easy on myself and my body.ended up spending my evening doing something I rarely do anymore: binge watching a video series.1/?

I used to watch a lot more video content, and it wasn't unusual for me to spend long stretches of time watching an entire tv series or what have you.but my attention wanders a lot more easily these days, and I always feel the pressure to be doing something productive, and you know how it is. so, I don't end up watching a lot of video anymore. short pieces, disconnected, light.

but yesterday afternoon, post-nap, and through the evening, I decided to catch up on some video that I've been way behind on wanting to watch for the last nine months or so. so I did, and the world continued to spin the entire time - phew! maybe it's not as important for me to feel so tied to productivity on a moment by moment basis, hm?but this isn't a thread about my feels or my hangups (directly ha) but about the video I was watching.

y'all have heard me go on about the band I play bass in, Doctor Deathray and Her Implements of Destruction, and my wonderful bandmates - the good doctor herself, drum slayer extraordinaire taxdan, and our keyboard pounding multi-instrumentalist Connor.but what's not always apparent is how versatile and diversely talented my bandmates are, and how incredibly active they are.so, let's talk a bit about Connor and his video production work of late.

Connor's been killing it keeping new content flowing on New Ellijay TV, and nowhere does it shine through more in my opinion than in his ongoing series titled "The Hastening (of the end of imperialism)". The writing, the research, and the production of The Hastening is all headed up by Connor, and while I've had the opportunity and privilege of being on the inside of the conversations about making The Hastening happen, I haven't been good about sitting down to watch it.that changed yesterday, and it's so overdue.

The Hastening is one of the most well-researched and laid out looks at the USian empire and its long-term strategies and imperialism around the world and the effects thereof and the impact on our daily lives. It's a look at US history from an angle that US residents do not get in our public or private education systems, and I believe that it's a critical piece in self-educating towards a more humane and just society. You can, of course, watch it on New Ellijay TV here: https://vod.newellijay.tv/w/p/fJ5N6WqaZwUJ79UbUH7raK - it's fediverse native video powered by peertube. Righteous.

Connor is, frankly, one of the smartest people I know, particularly when it comes to taking about world politics and macroeconomics. He is incredibly thorough in his research and documentation of his findings, cites his sources, and keeps his focus on the actual human toll imperialism has had and continues to have here in our "post-colonial" era that is anything but.

if The Hastening was produced and published by a PBS affiliate it would be in the running for big press awards as-is. it would also be entirely neutered and watered down to the point of being yet another channel for the empire to reinforce its longstanding policies of trying to control the extraction and leverage of the entire world's natural resources to the detriment of the majority of the world's population.Connor, however, pulls no punches and will thusly not receive any recognition from the mainstream press machine (beyond Facebook informing us that we can't buy ads on their platform lmfao).all the more reason for you to watch and listen and learn, frankly.

okay, go juice refilled.(did you know we roast coffee here in New Ellijay? at the makerspace? Connor is one of our coffee roasters on top of everything else.)I really implore you to watch The Hastening. Let Connor break down for you the history of imperialist expansion and its visibility today. Listen to his theories and explanations of the motivations behind the current events that you're not going to hear discussed in corporate media that exists to polish and parrot the state department press releases. And then take steps to stay informed and active in helping to dismantle the empires that have for so long plagued society - no secret and no spoiler, it's something that starts locally, with your neighbors and friends and family, in small ways.

The "world we live in" is the ongoing expression of the societal forces that have been set in motion for decades and centuries, and dismantling the engine of the oppression of all of humanity is not something that is going to happen overnight, but it will happen.Whether it happens through the state's own missteps or through the active efforts of the people to enact change, it will happen.Be informed about why things are happening, what led to things happening, and what real action individuals and groups can take to combat the deadly effects of the corporate-sponsored death machines that are today's massive military machines. It is not hopeless and it is not undoable. It's inevitable.

@djsundog Thanks for posting this. I've been looking for anything similar to Adam Curtis' Hypernormalisation (2016). But does this have closed captioning or subtitles?

@Gotterdammerung I'm not sure, but if it doesn't I'll get on the effort this week to make that change. I don't see anything currently, but we can at least get transcripts up if they aren't already and then figure out how to get it better integrated into the peertube videos.

@djsundog @Gotterdammerung There are not currently subtitles. It's on the agenda, but we haven't made it yet.
