The first thing I want to bring the the fediverse is a quote from the book, from the end of the chapter titled "Togetherness":The Web is a new social, public space. But because the Web has no geography, no surface, no container of space that pre-exists its habitation, we can't make the old mistake about what constitutes our sociality. The Web is a shared place that we choose to build, extend and inhabit. We form groups there because our interests aren't unique. How could they be if we're truly social? But the ground rules are different from the real world precisely because there's no ground to the Web. In the real world, masses get more faceless the further away they are. On the Web, each person is present only insofar as she has presented herself in a unique expression of her interests: many small faces, each distinct in their multitude. And since being on the Web is a voluntary activity, we are forced to face the excruciating fact that we seem to spend so much real world energy denying: Not only do we live in a shared world, but we like it that way.You could build a new destiny for your species on an idea as radical as that.I'll let you sit with that for a moment before I ramble on.#SPLJ2024

It can be easy to ignore how dramatically different this part of the web is from anything that's come before it, because we're pretty good at pattern matching even if there's no pattern around and we love to liken what is unfamiliar with what is familiar. Some of us olds remember bits and pieces of a pre-Web world. Some of y'all younger folk were born into a Webbed world, a world where of course you could end up being close friends - lovers! family! - with pseudo-anonymous others in unknown physicalities anywhere on the planet. We can share any bit of information with anyone else in the world almost instantaneously. We can do so not only with the written word but with real-time bi-directional audio and video, without even being tethered to a computer with a fixed location in physical space. We roam physical space and move completely independently in our voidplaces. But this is a very new state of affairs in human history, and it drastically changes everything about how we interact with each other, as individuals, as groups, and en masse. #SPLJ2024

taking apart trees that have been blown down is like a huge game of Jenga, but the blocks are spring loaded in non-obvious ways and have enough mass and potential energy to throw you as far as a trebuchet.still at the "go slow, take safe branches out of the way to make it easier to evaluate the game" stage, but no one has been tree-bucheted, so we're winning.I'll probably pick away at some of the safer pieces some more tomorrow before moving on to some bigger pieces that are laying fully down and not under tension.ended the day pruning away enough of the wisteria and side canopy to have a path from the front of the house through the work zone and created my favorite photo so far.dare ye enter the garden shed?#StormageddonInSundogistan2024

got the backend for #AllWhomstWander working well enough to wire it up to the super minimal client prototype I'd hardcoded.added some points of interest and non-player characters to the database and took a walk from the makerspace to the square downtown and got to peep all my NPCs floating in front of the proper POIs with associated labels - huzzah!this is all coming together nicely!now I'm off to cut up trees some more. might run and jump. feasible that I would consider pressing some wild flowers.:blobpats:

yesterday I crashed pretty hard energy-wise. I've been pushing, trying to get a lot done on multiple fronts, and my body finally called me on it and knocked me back into sleep mid-day to try and recharge a bit.still tired even after my nap, I decided to listen and go easy on myself and my body.ended up spending my evening doing something I rarely do anymore: binge watching a video series.1/?

I used to watch a lot more video content, and it wasn't unusual for me to spend long stretches of time watching an entire tv series or what have you.but my attention wanders a lot more easily these days, and I always feel the pressure to be doing something productive, and you know how it is. so, I don't end up watching a lot of video anymore. short pieces, disconnected, light.

but yesterday afternoon, post-nap, and through the evening, I decided to catch up on some video that I've been way behind on wanting to watch for the last nine months or so. so I did, and the world continued to spin the entire time - phew! maybe it's not as important for me to feel so tied to productivity on a moment by moment basis, hm?but this isn't a thread about my feels or my hangups (directly ha) but about the video I was watching.

y'all have heard me go on about the band I play bass in, Doctor Deathray and Her Implements of Destruction, and my wonderful bandmates - the good doctor herself, drum slayer extraordinaire taxdan, and our keyboard pounding multi-instrumentalist Connor.but what's not always apparent is how versatile and diversely talented my bandmates are, and how incredibly active they are.so, let's talk a bit about Connor and his video production work of late.

Connor's been killing it keeping new content flowing on New Ellijay TV, and nowhere does it shine through more in my opinion than in his ongoing series titled "The Hastening (of the end of imperialism)". The writing, the research, and the production of The Hastening is all headed up by Connor, and while I've had the opportunity and privilege of being on the inside of the conversations about making The Hastening happen, I haven't been good about sitting down to watch it.that changed yesterday, and it's so overdue.

The Hastening is one of the most well-researched and laid out looks at the USian empire and its long-term strategies and imperialism around the world and the effects thereof and the impact on our daily lives. It's a look at US history from an angle that US residents do not get in our public or private education systems, and I believe that it's a critical piece in self-educating towards a more humane and just society. You can, of course, watch it on New Ellijay TV here: https://vod.newellijay.tv/w/p/fJ5N6WqaZwUJ79UbUH7raK - it's fediverse native video powered by peertube. Righteous.

Connor is, frankly, one of the smartest people I know, particularly when it comes to taking about world politics and macroeconomics. He is incredibly thorough in his research and documentation of his findings, cites his sources, and keeps his focus on the actual human toll imperialism has had and continues to have here in our "post-colonial" era that is anything but.

if The Hastening was produced and published by a PBS affiliate it would be in the running for big press awards as-is. it would also be entirely neutered and watered down to the point of being yet another channel for the empire to reinforce its longstanding policies of trying to control the extraction and leverage of the entire world's natural resources to the detriment of the majority of the world's population.Connor, however, pulls no punches and will thusly not receive any recognition from the mainstream press machine (beyond Facebook informing us that we can't buy ads on their platform lmfao).all the more reason for you to watch and listen and learn, frankly.

okay, go juice refilled.(did you know we roast coffee here in New Ellijay? at the makerspace? Connor is one of our coffee roasters on top of everything else.)I really implore you to watch The Hastening. Let Connor break down for you the history of imperialist expansion and its visibility today. Listen to his theories and explanations of the motivations behind the current events that you're not going to hear discussed in corporate media that exists to polish and parrot the state department press releases. And then take steps to stay informed and active in helping to dismantle the empires that have for so long plagued society - no secret and no spoiler, it's something that starts locally, with your neighbors and friends and family, in small ways.

official #StormageddonInSundogistan2024 updates from the national weather service upgraded our area from having had one EF1 tornado that did a bunch of structural damage but now they've found we had three other tornadoes that night, another EF1 and two EF0, one of which their storm track pretty much runs square into our homestead, but with a highway in between, so I'm gonna go ahead and say an EF0 went through our entire treeline on its way to their official path.if it had been six hours earlier or later it almost certainly would have hit crossing vehicles.

@witchy @liaizon @t54r4n1 so now that Jimmy jumped in thread and I had a quick look at his masto.soc profile, it looks like they are indeed implementing activitypub - https://mastodon.social/@jsecretan/with_replies - so, defederating from maven.ly should help; looks like they're currently using staging.maven.ly (see test account https://staging.maven.ly/mastodon/actor/1 )but blocking the TLD is deffo the move imho #fediblock
