Like @Quinnypig, I’d love if Google went on the record about what happened with this one. https://www.unisuper.com.au/contact-us/outage-updateTl;dr is an entire org got wiped, and they’re trying to suggest it’s some kind of Google Cloud issue as the cause.

Google have apparently issued a statement via Unisuper. Might be worth people following up with Google to see if they wrote this - as far as I know it’s the first case of a major cloud provider screwing up a customer so badly. Unisuper say in their update they’ve been able to restore data from a backup they had at another cloud provider.

GCP issue where they accidentally deleted a customer continues - Google Cloud aren’t challenging it. Customer was able to recover as they had backups in another cloud provider after a recent migration to GCP. https://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/unisuper-private-cloud-outage-caused-by-google-cloud-issues/

One of the absolutely wild, to me, things is learning that cloud providers have fans… who absolutely refuse to believe the cloud provider could do something wrong. Who the fuck stans a cloud provider? Tech nerds, apparently.

Google Cloud (GCP) CEO has gone on the record now and said directly they accidentally deleted a $125bn business cloud estate in error. https://qz.com/google-cloud-pension-fund-unisuper-1851472990A config mistake at Google’s end led to their VMs being deleted.

@GossiTheDog The other fun fact is that a bunch of these companies have like 100,000 employees, and they get *really upset* if you point out on HN or the like that they are stanning their employer.I have been accused of "doxxing" for merely pointing out a guy loudly justifying why Google was the best at everything was a manager on their Ads team.

Google have issued a blog about the Google Cloud customer they accidentally deleted. A Google staff member accidentally set a termination date on their account, effectively, which deleted several thousand of their VMs. https://cloud.google.com/blog/products/infrastructure/details-of-google-cloud-gcve-incident

@GossiTheDog People ask me why I find it hard to trust cloud hosting providers. And this here is part of why.

@seanking @GossiTheDog Yep, needs to be treated like any other hardware. Isn't, though. If it was leased, can it be taken away. If hosted in someone else's premises, what assurances do you have on power, cooling, access. So many compounding issues with these clouds with regards to support, accountability, and the uneven effects on you vs the provider for a mistake.
