If you are going to a protest, consider not bringing a phone with you. But if you do bring one along, there are some steps you can take to minimize your risks.I helped update The Markup's guide originally published in 2020:https://themarkup.org/the-breakdown/2024/05/04/how-do-i-prepare-my-phone-for-a-protest-updated-2024

There's also a PDF cheat sheet you can print out and distribute locally, if you are so inclined.https://themarkup.org/prepmyphone

@dphiffer Nice, but recommending Signal should be out-of-date now too. Nov 2021 they added a proprietary message scanning component. In their blog they said it was for spam, but really it could be used for anything since it's not open-source anymore. (See: https://signal.org/blog/keeping-spam-off-signal/#:~:text=to%20keep%20signal%20a%20free%20global%20communication%20service%20without%20spam%2C%20we%20must%20depart%20from%20our%20totally-open%20posture%20and%20develop%20one%20piece%20of%20the%20server%20in%20private%3A%20a%20system%20for%20detecting%20and%20disrupting%20spam%20campaigns.%20). Plus Signal uses phone numbers for ID, so that's easy to figure out who bought the phone number when/where.

@dphiffer A better choice would be a server-less mesh network messaging system such as Briar (https://pocketnow.com/how-keep-communicating-when-your-internet-disrupted/) which even has panic button support for emergency wiping. Or something where you or someone trustworthy can own the server like Chatmail (https://github.com/deltachat/chatmail) & DeltaChat's CounterMITM encryption key sharing.
