Hey musicians - I was listening to a thing about Spotify being crappy in terms of rev share. This is a familiar experience for cartoonists on other platforms! SO, if I want to support musicians, what's the best way to consume? Website? YouTube? Physical media?

@ZachWeinersmith pretty much every artist I know says bandcamp, and patreon if you want to further support specific artists.

@ZachWeinersmith Bandcamp ! You can buy music (digital or physical) and merch directly to the bands (with a small fee for the plateform).

@ZachWeinersmith Bandcamp, anytime.Even if it isn't on Bandcamp Friday, if I spend $10 on an album, the artist gets at least $8.50, $9 if they have sold over $250 in any one year of the last three.

@ZachWeinersmithForget where, but I've read that it's reached the point where literally pirating the music is better for artists, then you throw the Spotify Premium cost at a random patreon every month instead.

@ZachWeinersmith Not a musician, but have pondered same. Of streaming services, Tidal pays artists best per stream. For digital albums that are yours (as files!), use Bandcamp - today is Bandcamp Friday (1st Fri every month) when the site waives its share so as to support artists more.

@ZachWeinersmith I've heard that for streaming services specifically Napster and Tidal have always been the best, yes that Napster. Here a link to a site that breaks down a bunch of info: https://soundcharts.com/blog/music-streaming-rates-payouts

@ZachWeinersmith As others have noted, Bandcamp (especially today) is an excellent way to support individual artists/bands directly when you like their music.Attending live shows and purchasing merch is another great way.Additionally, if you want to support musicians more broadly, please check out https://weareumaw.org/make-streaming-pay and consider supporting our push for legislation to improve musicians’ pay equity.Lastly, you can find my Bandcamp link in my profile.

@ZachWeinersmith I asked a drummer in a band I like this once, and he said it was all peanuts. Some were roasted, some were salted. He said the best way to support bands was buy merch.

@ZachWeinersmith if you would like a book length treatment on this exact issue I cannot recommend enough 'Chokepoint Capitalism' by Rebecca Giblin and Cory Doctorow.

@ZachWeinersmith what platforms do cartoonists use? Agreed the steaming services for music have a poor payout but surprisingly Amazon is closer to the top of the better payers than the bottom. Merch, live and direct sales will be better for musicians in general. But streaming numbers do help artists with booking festivals and whatnot and their socials.

@ZachWeinersmith I'd also say "Bandcamp", but would add "for now". It's been sold to a B2B music license trading company (or something similar) in October, and 50% of (mostly editorial writing) staff got laid off. We'll see if enshittification proper will ensue, but I'm not confident...

@ZachWeinersmith As everyone else have said, Bandcamp is fine still. But check out the new sites like https://mirlo.space/ and https://jam.coop/.Also, some artists are self-hosting with Faircamp. Many are featured in the Faircamp webring: https://faircamp.webr.ing/
