I'm back to reading Inventing Reality and chapter one comes out of the gate swinging Hard.I knew it was going to be a leftist take on the media, but I wasn't expecting it to start swinging this quickly.

"We don't have a free and independent press in the United States, but one that is tied by purchase and persuasion to wealthy elites and their government counterparts."

"The news media do not fail to do their jobs, rather they perform their function all too well. Their objective is not to produce an alert, critical, and informed citizenry, but the kind of people who will vote for Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, or Ronald Reagan. Their aim is to create the kind of opinion climate that makes such choices seem plausible, an opinion universe dominated by corporate and government elites, almost all of whom share the same ideological perspectives about political and economic reality."

@ajroach42 This is basically the take that "The Twittering Machine" has, but around "social" media in particular. He also wrote this, which is on my list to readhttps://www.overdrive.com/media/966667/american-insurgents

@ajroach42 🥥 Eye don't understand why you would lump former President Jimmy Carter -- one our best Presidents -- with Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, Andrew. Just for starters, Nixon and Reagan were 2 of our WORST Presidents on the environment and Carter was already aware of the need to leave fossil fuels behind in the 1970s. 🥥#Nixon, #Reagan, #Carter, #USPresidents

@jstatepost I didn't. Michael Parenti did in the boom inventing reality from which this quote was pulled.

@jstatepost and I think that the fact that Carter is, perhaps, the only good president of the last 50+ years, and he's frankly milquetoast at best, makes his point pretty well.

@ajroach42 🥥 Not having read the Parenti book, Andrew, Eye won't comment on it. However, Eye lived through the Carter years, and Eye can share my impression of what THAT was like. It was non-stop undermining of President Carter by the traditional press, and almost total failure to back him on his accomplishments. Reminds me of how the press is short-changing, undermining President Biden nowadays. 🥥#CorporatePress, #ConservativePress, #PresidentCarter, #Biden, #TuckersBalls

@ajroach42 This is why independent writers are so important now, those who write and warn from their heart and conviction. I write on Substack on the truth about climate change. I do my research and every word comes from facts. Sorry for the shameless self-promotion, but this crisis is real, now and dire. https://geoffreydeihl.substack.com/

@ajroach42 That's why billionaires buy media:"[The major role of the press is] to continually recreate a view or reality supportive of existing social and economic class power."

@Greengordon right, but the point of the book is that even so called "independent" press is in service of supporting existing class structures, because capitalism begets capitalism.

@ajroach42 Hi Andrew, are you the author? I would disagree, because I have the experience of media like the @thenarwhal , @thetyee , @NatObserver , @thewalrus , and @TheBreach I don’t find they assume or push capitalism as part of the solutions needed to society’s problems. I don’t see them as trying to maintain current class structures, where the MSM clearly is.

@Greengordon @thenarwhal @thetyee @NatObserver @thewalrus @TheBreach This is from Inventing Reality, a 1993 book by Michael Parenti. If you'd like to discuss it further, there's a copy on the internet archive. The book and its observations are rooted in the realities of 1993. I'm not saying that actual independent press does not or cannot exist, merely that press does not have to be owned by billionaires in order to serve their interests. If you'd like to read the book, I'd be happy to discuss it further, otherwise I believe this conversation has reached it's conclusion.
