@CosmicThe quote "If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck" is often attributed to John Steinbeck, but there is uncertainty and lack of concrete evidence regarding this attribution. Some internet sources claim John Steinbeck as the author, but there is no clear citation from his works or speeches where this quote appears. On the other hand, the quote is also attributed to David Hackworth, a well-known military figure. Jeff Cooper was a significant figure in modern firearms training and is known for his work on handgun technique and the development of the "modern technique" of handgun shooting. While it's possible that Cooper may have expressed a similar sentiment given his background in military tactics and firearms training, definitive proof of him saying this exact quote is not readily available. especially those in the military and tactical fields, it might be attributed to multiple figures over time, leading to some confusion about its origin. In summary, while John Steinbeck, David Hackworth, and Jeff Cooper have all been variously credited with the quote, the most concrete attribution seems to be to David Hackworth. However, the connection to Jeff Cooper, given his background and influence, remains a possibility.@Cosmic

@AlphakilopapaBut in this case I'm accurate and you're wrong? I do like "strategy" better. Love this, via GPTIn warfare, the terms "tactics" and "strategies" refer to different levels of planning and execution:Tactics:Focus: Tactics are concerned with the conduct of individual engagements or battles. They deal with the immediate, the here and now.Scope: They are smaller in scale and involve decisions about the positioning and movement of @Cosmic

It's about how to best deploy and employ units and resources in a combat situation.Time Frame: Tactics are short-term in nature and adapt to the dynamic conditions of the battlefield.Examples: Flanking an enemy, choosing the right formation for an assault, or deciding when and where to deploy artillery.Strategies:Focus: Strategy is about @Alphakilopapa @Cosmic

@AlphakilopapaThis is perfect because if you think about Republics, not only does it not look and sound enough like Democrat and entirely too much like Republican, but it also means that the entire "mob rule" thing can't work because States Rights, etc, prevents takeovers. @Cosmic

@chris @Alphakilopapa Regardless of what the original quote was,Strategy is what makes fights fair or unfair. Tactics is how you execute particular fights, and can lead to someone winning despite unfair odds.

@Cosmic @Alphakilopapa on second thought, it has a lot to do with scale. At scale, it's strategy; on the ground, when I was a haole kid playing dirty against 10 moke cousins, it was tactics :)Sharing notes from growing up haole in Hawaii in the 80s https://chrisabraham.com/blog/sharing-notes-from-growing-up-haole-in-hawaii-in-the-80sGrowing Up Haole in Hawaii https://chrisabraham.com/hi/growing-up-haole-in-hawaii

@chris @Alphakilopapa Throwing dirt in their eyes would be tactics.Strategy would be getting jacked, or beating someone up on your first day in prison so you don’t have to beat anyone else up

@Cosmic @Alphakilopapa Throwing dirt in their eyes is only a behavior unless it's a practiced behavior. Doing something, unless it's trained and practiced, isn't a tactic, it's a action, it's a response, it's muscle memory from training.

@Cosmic @Alphakilopapa A strategy is making a plan to get jacked and then beat someone up on your first day of prison; a tactic is getting into the right position to win that first fight based on your previous strategy. Strategy never pulls a trigger or breaks a nose. Generals and Lieutenants make strategy on maps, team leaders make tactical choices to engage or not to engage in the field. Whatever. I agree to disagree (a tactic)

@Cosmic @Alphakilopapa > Military tactics are distinct from military strategy, which refers to the overall plan and goals of a military campaign. Tactics are more about the execution of moves in the battlefield, focusing on short-term goals and immediate outcomes. They include techniques for attacking, defending, using terrain to advantage, and coordinating with other units, among other maneuvers.

@chris @Alphakilopapa Both tactics and strategy are military terms applied to other situations by analogyThrowing dirt in someone’s eyes can be seen as an action or a reaction, but it is also a tactic. Militarily a tactic might also mean sending the spears in before the cavalry. Making a “tactical” retreat to lure the enemy, etc.Tactics are any decision made by anyone on the battlefield. Strategy is any decision made between battles for long term objectives.
