Ended up ordering the parts to essentially build yet another computer.

I've had an RX 6600 lying around not knowing what to use it for.So I decided to buy an ASRock DeskMeet X300 plus CPU, storage and RAM.Much better to plug into my bedroom TV rather than keeping a Steam Deck connected to it all the time.

I ended up going with a Ryzen 5 4500 rather surprisingly.Everyone shat on that chip when it launched as an absolute embarrassment, but that's because it launched at $129.I paid 926kr (~$71 equiv after removing VAT). Pretty decent amount of CPU for that price.

From my understanding the 4500 is a 4600G with a disabled iGPU. And of the popular CPUs, it's closest in specs to the 3600, but is a monolithic chip rather than a chiplet design. And it's only got 8MB of L3 cache instead of 32MB cache. So it should in the best case have 3600-ish performance when the extra cache isn't needed, but can be a bit slower than the 3600 when the extra cache would've been useful

Anyways, it'll be nice to have a "gaming cube" connected to my bedroom TV rather than relying on a steam deck, even if it's definitely overkill.I paid 4964kr (~$380 equiv. after removing VAT) for a case, motherboard, 500W PSU, AX200 WiFi, 6-core CPU, 16GB RAM and 1TB NVMe StorageIt's amazing how much computer you can get for your money when the previous generation and socket is dying. Even if there's no GPU in the price above.

@quad Yeah - and don't even get me started on #refurbushed #workstations + cheap used #GPU combo...At leas tin the global north where #refurbisher sell stuff at reasonable prices that is...* hears #LowSpecGamer slowly going back and laying down his crowbar *I mean if all you want is casual 1080p gaming than any recent low-end GPU that doesn't even need additional power is fine - heck even most AMD and Intel iGPUs will be sufficient for a lot of casual & coop games as well as emulation!

@kkarhan Here in Norway the office PC + LP GPU stuff is just long dead.8+ years ago you'd find stuff like HP SFF machines with i5-3470s and i7-3770s in them for cheap. But for ages no just about every company in Norway has been using laptops + docking stations. So the used office desktop market is just dry as a bone.

@quad @kkarhan I can see using nucs/ office PCs for clusters now. Or low end emulator boxes

@kkarhan Norway's used market is shit in the first place because the used market for enterprise stuff is typically entirely B2B.A company would sell all their e-waste in bulk to a company like Arrow. And then Arrow would only resell it to other companies or schools. So used enterprise hardware has typically been inaccessible to private individuals. From my understanding it's because selling to a consumer means consumer protections, so companies just decide that consumers won't get anything

@kkarhan Add to this the fact that modern LP GPUs are pretty crap and this combo is pretty much dead here and has been for ages.I used to have an SFF machine with an i7-2600 iirc, then i slapped some random quadro GPU i found at a dump into it. Good times.
