Received a call from a potential new client today. They need a server to host their website, a small e-commerce platform, and a shared file storage solution. I suggested a FreeBSD-based solution with jails but was asked for alternatives without any explanation. So, I offered Linux options, possibly with Docker services, LXC containers, or separate VMs. Still, they requested other solutions. I started explaining about an OpenBSD-based approach with separate VMs for each service, or even NetBSD. Again, alternatives were requested. At that point, I paused and asked, 'Do you have any specific solution in mind?' The reply was, 'Something based on Windows or, at most, MacOS. I don’t trust this free stuff, it might be okay for universities, but the real world is something else.' I hadn’t heard such a statement in over 20 years. I began to explain... to no avail. I also mentioned that I work with these systems, not Windows or MacOS on servers (???). With an air of superiority, they insisted that’s what they wanted and had no budget limits to get it. I quoted them 50,000 euros. The call ended within the next 30 seconds. 🤣#TechSupport #ITConsulting #OpenSource #Linux #FreeBSD #OpenBSD #NetBSD #Docker #VM #Windows #MacOS #ClientStories #TechWorld

@stefano I hope you noted that #macOS wouldn't exist without the free #Unix stuff from universities, specifically Carnegie-Mellon's #Mach microkernel and the #BSD userland.

@stefano you made the right call. I would have explained the number of top performing companies using "the free stuff" and wasted more of my time. "Quote high and walk away" is a better approach.

@KasTasMykolas they didn't propose it. Maybe I could propose OS/2 - but they'd have insisted with Windows, I guess

@gaysteve Yeah but at that point @stefano would have to deal with redhat stuff. Bad client and on top of that also bad tech, I doubt that's in his interest.

@stefano Wow. That person seems to think the price tag is /the/ reason for your recommending those libre solutions ("no budget limits"). I always suspected people think like this.

@datalinkdroid yes, there are people that think that your suggestions are purely based on the solutions that make you gain more money. It's hard, sometimes, to explain that I love what I do and I can't do something I wouldn't do for myself.

@stefano I remember, not so long ago, having the same conversation in here, but in re "legal affairs". My conclusion is exactly the same. If the client wants "you" (the professional) to do as he says instead of what you know it's the right thing to do: just ask for at least 3 times more money than what you consider more than enough, and have them sign a document releasing you for all personal and professional liability. It works 99% of time, or you get a lot of money and no legal liability.

@stefano That night they Netflix & Chilled not realizing that Netflix runs on FreeBSD There needs to be education on how the Internet and the various services hosted on it run and the software involved Most don't realize what runs their phones and game systemsThe prospective client didn't know MacOS is BSD based, I'd guess

@stefano next time tell them they can pay, point them to me, I will build a FreeBSD with an alternative boot menu and we can split the check. I know, sounds like sarcasm, but I’m being 100% honest. Sounds like a perfect way to make money.

@chihuamaranian That's the point. This person doesn't even know what an OS is, but wants to dictate my tech choices. Unfortunately, it's quite common - but they don't go far with me, then.
