@Klaatu i've used Notepad++ to do this sort of thing (as well as may other tasks), but it doesn't have the OCR functionality.

@SirLuke yeah I've done that with ultraedit for decades. The advantage here is it's much faster and it can scan through formats cleanly where your tools may be looking at it as a basic file being searched which could have erroneous hits.

@Klaatu The file format support is the key thing, it looks like. If you could search through archive formats in Notepad++, you could make do with it for things like epub and docx, but I think the devs want to avoid an Emacs situation and are conscious to severely limit the scope of the application to keep things fast and lean.
