"Americans United has been warning about theocracy for years. Some people said we were overreacting. But look at what is happening in Texas (and elsewhere). What else do you call it when women can no longer get a necessary medical procedure that was legal everywhere as recently as two years ago because of someone else’s religious beliefs?"#secularism #theocracy #ChristianExtremismhttps://www.au.org/the-latest/articles/tx-abortion-ban-theocracy/#

@vjack Hmm... Theocracy properly is government _by_ a priesthood, not just enforcing religious laws. Vatican City is a theocracy. So is Iran. But European states in the medieval and early modern period enforced religious rules under a monarch who was strongly expected to enforce religious law without being a religious leader. I would not call England under Henry VIII or France under Louis XIV a theocracy. Of course, they also weren't free societies.

@vjack Though maybe you could make a case for Henry VIII; he did declare himself head of the newly formed Church of England.

@gmcgath This is mere pedantry. It doesn’t matter if the head of state is himself a clergyman if he’s taking orders from clergy. What matters is that these dominionist assholes don’t realize they’re undermining the very legal protections that guarantee their right to engage in their preferred form of demon worship.@vjack

@starbreaker @vjack Sorry, but using words correctly isn't "mere pedantry." If any government that gets direction from religious authorities is a theocracy, then most European and Asian countries through history have been theocracies, and the US was a theocracy for most of its history. (There was public school prayer when I was in the 1st grade.)Use words too broadly, and you take away their meaning and impact.
