I don't know if the Star Trek the Next Generation technical manual specifically tells us how many hollow decks are on the Enterprise D, but something that occurred to me just moments ago is how available the hollow decks are whenever they need one. Seems to me if you have a ship with as many people on it as the Enterprise D, the holodecks would be booked up for months in advance. I think they even implied this a little bit more on Deep Space Nine with Quark's Hollow Suites.#StarTrek

@Ricardus No one on the crew wants to use the same Holodeck as Riker.#startrek

@Ricardus in Lower Decks they often show that they queue for it, with the next booking showing up early. My Canon explanation in TNG is that the top brass gets preemptive priority, kicking out the little ensign simulating jet ski on Risa to simulate the inner working of the warp engine.Or, you know, play Sherlock Holmes.

@Ricardus someone on Reddit did the math. There are apparently 16 holodecks on a galaxy class ship. With about 1000 crew, everyone should get about 8 hours per month for their own use. And of course people frequently share their time with others.

@Ricardus holodecka being booked is a common plot thing in Star Trek Voyager. Early I. The series, it's about resources. Later it's about booking. The season 7 episode "Drive" has Belanna Torres trade favours for holodeck timeslots, for example.#StarTrek

@claudius was that when she was basically committing self harm with the holodeck safeties off?

@RicardusNo, in drive they are not even on the holodeck, it's just a plot device of Belanna putting work into the relationship and Tom being a selfish dick. The self harm one is earlier in the series, but I don't recall exactly which one.

@claudius A, cool. Yeah, I'm a huge Trek fan but Voyager is the series I don't know by heart, even though Jeri Ryan is in it. 🙂

@claudius I do the nightly #AllStarTrek watches where we watch the episodes that air on H&I and post about it with hashtags, so I do catch up, but the later episodes like Voyager and Enterprise sometimes get missed because of the lateness of the hour.
