ITM. I'm looking for a dude named Ben for hire to help me, please. My delivery from my private email server to gmail and outlook has been failing and is now unusable. It's the SPF/DKIM settings I need to set. But my website is hosted in one place and my email is hosted on another server. I think this is the issue. I can't quite figure it out myself. Can I have paid one-on-one time with you to debug? TYFYC

@rdolishny you will need to craft the dns records - google and follow along. One issue is that private smtp servers may get a up address that are blacklisted globally. A good resource is https://mxtoolbox.com/

@SigPig @rdolishny It isn't easy. It's been a decade since I screwed around with it.Having your email hosted at a different server than your website is not a problem; it's always a distinct host anyway. Is your email hosted at some no-name place? If your DKIM/SPF records got lost, then you have to redo them. If gmail and/or a blacklist has decided the IP address is on the shit list, well, OOPS.Have you considered fastmail.fm ? Or runbox? Some service that specializes in hosting email?

@IceCubeSoup @SigPig some great questions. My email is hosted on hover.com seems legit but my domain is hosted on a shared IP that I suspect may be some of the problem. I have added the recommended DKIM/SPF to both the DNS for my hosting and my email. Can I delete this from my hosting?

@rdolishny @SigPig As far as I remember, these things go in TXT records, and that TXT record has some mention of the MX domain name your are trying to configure.I'm not sure what you mean by "delete this from my hosting", because I can't see the dashboard you are looking at. Both your website and your email are "hosted" somewhere, so I can't tell what you mean by "my hosting". Presume you mean your web hosting.

@rdolishny @SigPig What does Hover have to say about all of this? Maybe they are having a wider issue that affects more than just you.

@IceCubeSoup @SigPig this is what I get from hover. But they still provide me with the ability to update the DNS there. I just haven't tried that yet.

@rdolishny Your mx )Mail Exchange) revord points to hostedemail.comYour SPF does not reference hostedemail.com nor its IPSo first, I would modify your SPF record to include your mail server.

@rdolishny might be as simple as adding:+include:mx.hover.com.cust.hostedemail.comafter the "relay.mailchannels.net" part and before the ~all part, spaces in between each entry.DKIM is another separate step.

@rdolishny DNS is typically kept in one place, unless we break out sub-domains (zones). Yours are at hostpapa, so those are the records to work on.

@rdolishny Sometimes it is easier to use a tool to build answers like what the SPF record should look like. This is one I have used before: https://mxtoolbox.com/SPFRecordGenerator.aspxThe syntax is fairly simple: first a version (it is always the same for now), then a listing of authorities for who can send email as your domain, and then how strict the record should be treated. You have: v=spf1 (version)+ip4:69.90.163.90 (trust this address)+include:spf.hostpapa.com (trust this domain)1/2

@raintrees I did this. It took some time to find the txt entry (there are 237 lines on this DNS which is sketchy). Let's see how email works in the morning. Thank you @raintrees

@rdolishny this actually isn’t really easy for those that don’t do this all the time, but my mail host MXroute did as much as possible on their end and then laid it all out what I needed to do on my end in the domain registrar. Your situation has a twist I’m not certain of.

@rdolishny There is also a code that can be used to tell the world that your mail exchanger can be trusted: mxThat could have been used instead of the +mail_site_url, and is probably cleaner in the long run. Sorry I did not remember that sooner :)

@maxburn thank you! @raintrees identified a possible missing line so I've made that change to hostpapa's 237 line DNS entry (!) and will let this stew overnight. I definitely have something strange going on with webhosting on one platform (hostpapa) and my email through another (hover)

@rdolishny basically you have some records that need to be updated in wherever your domain name is held. Your mail host should have help on what you need to enter. The web sight doesn’t factor into it, but your domain might be there.

@rdolishny ok, if your email is in hover is the domain there? They should be able to make this just work when they have it all under one roof. They also have decent support. Only issue is if you moved your name server away from hover, then they don’t have control of it anymore. It needs to be handled by whoever is running the name server, but it should be a simple copy paste from hover to where the name server is. @raintrees
