@neil But it's a much harder technical problem; extracting stats and checking they're a reasonably close match to one known reference (your passport) is fairly easy. But what's the reference in this case? It might work if you can do it against the recently-landed-flights, so it's a comparison against a few hundred people.

@penguin42 @neil Did you ever use the iris scanner they used to have at some airports? You had to register for it, obviously, so the number of users was probably quite low, but it worked without the need to present a passport.

@penguin42 @neil Bit that startled me was using an ordinary phone to extract data from a passport. Didn't realise they were the same sort of NFC. Just tried on my passport - definitely recognises there's a chip there to read but says “Tag Not Supported”. Must need a particular app or something.

@penguin42 If they're only passing the data on they don't need to. It'd be down to the border controllers at the far end to check. @neil

@penguin42 @neil see recent https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001s8qd/the-secret-genius-of-modern-life-series-2-1-passport by the awesome Hannah Fry. There's literally a demo of how this works by scanning everone as they walk down a hall.

@falken @neil That might be how/when you acquire the images; but the accuracy/comparison requirements are wholly different from comparing one person to one passport.

@penguin42 @neil it's still a very restricted set because you know who should be off that plane

@penguin42 @neil and the failure mode is shown in the show too - basically falls back to as-now "please come over here"

@neil @secretbatcave Why do they sometimes behave erratically until I remember to take off my glasses (not worn in passport photo)? Do they look for a close enough match before presenting the image to the human operator?

@mansr @neil @secretbatcave I've also had really weird non-human type failures occur too. Like the camera just going up, then down, then up over and over.. like it can't find my face.

@CenturyAvocado @neil @secretbatcave I've seen that too. One time it stopped in a low position, possibly mistaking the design on my t-shirt for a face.

@mansr @CenturyAvocado @neil @secretbatcave total guesswork here, but I could imagine that the face-location is automatic for example. It would be much slower if the human operator had to manually move all of the cameras. And locating a face must be a much simpler task than verifying that the face is definitely the one in the passport.
