@AlaskaWx LOL. I remember getting AAA triptik maps in the 80s to find my way on long drives. Seems so quaint now.

@IdahoLark The Milepost was a "must have" resource for any driving trip in Alaska and the Yukon into the early 2010s.

@IdahoLark @AlaskaWx Drove to the moon & back & there again (figuratively) west of the Mississippi using Rand McNally Road Atlases. Did use the Milepost on the AK car trip, but it was too big for the bicycle trip. No need for that in Hawai'i.

@njeanneburns I still remember my childhood phone number but struggle to remember my husbandās. If Garmin hadnāt been selling talking GPS units when I had to go to Los Angeles for work years ago Iād still be there, lost.

@njeanneburns @IdahoLark "The Milepost" I was referring to was a an annual publication. Same in Alaska, milepost references are common on the road system outside of the metro areas, e.g. just last week, from Alaska State Troopers: "Parks Highway is closed in both directions at mile 343 due to a vehicle collision"

@AlaskaWx @njeanneburns I always thought it was odd in Fairbanks how we reversed that and said ā14 Mile Chena Hot Springs Roadā rather than Mile 14. And we were still buying the annual āMilepostā up until we left Alaska. It had a lot of good info a cell phone wouldnāt tell you.

@ArrowbearMoore @AlaskaWx We keep an Atlas or Gazetteer in both vehicles, though weāve been screwed by them a few times. Drive for miles on a dirt road that turns out to be gated, or discover itās nowhere near worthy of a solid line on a map.

@IdahoLark @AlaskaWx I also carried a good supply of USFS maps. Had a rocket box full of those and topos. Plotting out routes is a pleasant exercise so many are deprived of by digital guidance. Can't count the times a visitor was lost in the park because of google.
