Fairbanks precipitation (melted snow plus rain) Monday through Wednesday totaled 0.62 inches (15.7mm). As this is the Interior Alaska dry season, that's high enough to rank as the 9th highest three day total mid-March to mid-April in the past 96 year. But here's where it gets interesting: 3 of 10 highest totals at this time of year have occurred in the 2020s. #akwx #Climate @Climatologist49 @anisian

March or April is typically the driest month of the year for most of Alaska except Southeast and the Gulf of Alaska coast, where June is widely the driest. February or March is the driest month in much of NW Canada into the southeastern mainland Alaska. Based on ERA5 1991-2020 data. #akwx #Climate @Climatologist49

Sea surface temperatures difference from the 1991-2020 average for the oceans around around Alaska. Generally near to above normal except in sea ice-influenced areas in the eastern Bering Sea. Data courtesy NOAA. @Climatologist49 @ZLabe #akwx #SST #Arctic

Mostly sunny Sunday afternoon in the Bering Strait region, providing a nice view from space. This truecolor image is (roughly) what you would see if you were riding on the satellite with a pair of high powered binoculars. The mix of open water, mobile pack ice and some quite large ice flows is normal for this time of year. Image courtesy GINA/UAF. #akwx #SeaIce

Ice broke on the Kuskokwim River at Bethel at 410pm AKDT Monday. This is five days earlier than the average break-up date over the past 50 years. The typical break-up nowadays is 8 days earlier than it was in the 1920s. #akwx #Spring2025 @Climatologist49

April sea surface temperature departures from 1991-2020 average from the NOAA high-resolution OISSTv2.1 dataset. Except for sea ice influenced areas, SSTs were above normal in the Bering Sea as well virtually the entire Gulf of Alaska. @ZLabe @Climatologist49 #akwx #Arctic #SST

Spring (March through May) average temperature departure from the 1991-2020 baseline around the Arctic. Most of Iceland and the Nordic Arctic had a top-3 warmest spring since 1950, as did parts of Greenland and eastern Siberia. Nowhere in the Arctic had a top-3 coolest Spring. How can we work with this? The man is lying under oath. Congress permits it and NOAA is silent. The claim is that NWS offices are fully staffed. https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/06/weather/lutnick-hurricane-center-nws-cuts-climate

Sea surface temperatures around Alaska are increasingly cooler than the 1991-2020 baseline. North of the Bering Strait, later than normal sea ice melt the primary driver. Over the northern Gulf of Alaska, clouds and cooler airmass limiting seasonal warming. Bristol Bay and the western Bering Sea remain warm. In case you’re wondering, here’s the list of the top ten hottest weeks in Fairbanks since 1930. Based on the actual temperatures Sunday & Monday and NWS forecast thru Friday, there’s virtually no chance this heatwave will make the top 10. Very bad Arctic news. U.S. will cease delivery of the underlying data feeding sea ice analysis in the next fews days. Previously it was announced that data flow would end in late September, so work on alternatives has started, but global sea ice monitoring will be operating in degraded mode for some time to come. #akwx #Arctic #SeaIce @Climatologist49

High temperatures (ºF) in and around Alaska on Monday. Quite warm in most of Southeast Alaska, Yukon and northwest British Columbia. A little cooler than the weekend over most of mainland Alaska. The sea breeze at Kaktovik briefly weakened and the temperature popped up to 68F (20.0C) which is the highest temperature so far this year at Alaska's northeastern most community. #akwx #weather
