This is fascinating to see.. I have long been intrigued by the ideas around #SOLID “pods” from Tim Berners-Lee and others working with him. The whole idea of keeping all *your data* in one place, and then having services pull it from your cache. Very much aligned with the #POSSE philosophy for publishing. But there has not yet been many ways to use those pods. Could this combination with #ActivityPub help? Hmmm… glad to see people working on this! From: @box464https://mastodon.social/@box464/111667645752527651

@danyork @box464 I never understood how Solid is supposed to solve our privacy problems (and I suspect that, if it were not from Berners-Lee, the project would have got zero interest). I mean, once someone pulled the data to "provide a service", how to be sure they did not keep a copy?

@bortzmeyer @box464 Yes, my focus has been on the portability and long-term availability of data (I.e. you don’t lose all your content when a service decides to shut down or block your account). And so in that light, Solid is an interesting idea for exploration. I am also mostly focused on the publishing of public info (articles, sites, blog posts)For more private info.. yes, you would need to be careful about who you give access to.

@danyork @box464 Even for this use case, what is the point of Solid when compared to a simple Yunohost/Netxcloud/custom tinkering?

@bortzmeyer @box464 The challenge is all that custom tinkering. Most people just want to share info, not be a sysadmin. I think that is why FB had such success - they took away the pain and friction of running your own website. To me the *promise* of something like Solid is to have an easy repository of your own info under your own control. But the Solid project today has a long way to go to make that a reality. And so yes, today, I see little difference.

@danyork @box464 If you don't want custom tinkering, use Yunohost or Nextcloud. (OK, it is still a bit more work than using Google Drive.)
