Wow! Our 14yo just pointed me to https://www.fakespot.com , a very cool project from @mozilla ! Install the browser extension and start searching at a site like Amazon with many reviews... and Fakespot gives ratings showing how accurate the reviews are for a given product. And shows you what the *actual* customer rating would be if you remove the fake reviews.Very cool! Kudos to the Mozilla team for coming out with this!

For all of the people on here who, like me, have never heard of this... apparently "rizz" is a word (short for "charisma")... and it's Oxford's "Word of the Year" 😀 - https://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/4340335-oxford-names-rizz-word-of-the-year/

The moment when you realize there is no single-word equivalent of the German “Jawohl!” in English. 😃(When trying to explain to someone what the word meant.)

Advocates for #ActivityPub - IF YOU HAVE A #WORDPRESS SITE, have you installed the ActivityPub plugin? https://wordpress.org/plugins/activitypub/At the State of the Word address this week, Matt Mullenweg was asked about support for the plugin, and he commented that less than 5,000 sites had installed it. So he wasn't sure how interested people are in it.So... if you have a WP site, let's start installing that plugin and making more sites available via ActivityPub! 😀#StateOfTheWord #SotW

@Wolven very sorry to hear of your experience. I would like to hope people here would not be.. but I feel like we are experiencing an overall increase in rudeness everywhere. 🙁

This is fascinating to see.. I have long been intrigued by the ideas around #SOLID “pods” from Tim Berners-Lee and others working with him. The whole idea of keeping all *your data* in one place, and then having services pull it from your cache. Very much aligned with the #POSSE philosophy for publishing. But there has not yet been many ways to use those pods. Could this combination with #ActivityPub help? Hmmm… glad to see people working on this! From: @box464https://mastodon.social/@box464/111667645752527651

@bortzmeyer @box464 Yes, my focus has been on the portability and long-term availability of data (I.e. you don’t lose all your content when a service decides to shut down or block your account). And so in that light, Solid is an interesting idea for exploration. I am also mostly focused on the publishing of public info (articles, sites, blog posts)For more private info.. yes, you would need to be careful about who you give access to.

@bortzmeyer @box464 The challenge is all that custom tinkering. Most people just want to share info, not be a sysadmin. I think that is why FB had such success - they took away the pain and friction of running your own website. To me the *promise* of something like Solid is to have an easy repository of your own info under your own control. But the Solid project today has a long way to go to make that a reality. And so yes, today, I see little difference.

If you only have time to read one long article today, I would strongly recommend this beautiful piece by Mia Sato at The Verge on the theme of “#Google shapes everything on the Web”: https://www.theverge.com/c/23998379/google-search-seo-algorithm-webpage-optimizationIt explains in both text and animations why it is that #SEO has driven every website to look the same… why even short articles are being broken up by headings… why author bylines are suddenly expanding into bios…… and why the #Web is increasingly bland, useless, and untrustworthy…1/

It also explains why increasingly people are using *other* search experiences (ex TikTok) - or moving content into other systems - purely because the #Web is no longer working in the way it used to. It’s now gamed by so many… and filled with generative-AI spawned content farms….Certainly some of us keep posting to our good old websites or blogs… largely because they were and are labors of love, not profit. But those seeking profit or fame are all playing the SEO game…2/

Great to see this Washington Post piece from @willoremus that lines up with what we published yesterday in our @internetsociety response to the #NetChoice decision - that the Supreme Court upheld the right to content moderation: https://www.internetsociety.org/blog/2024/07/us-supreme-court-upholds-right-of-websites-to-moderate-content/Please give his newsletter a read! From: @willoremushttps://mastodon.social/@willoremus/112717218459636502

@ChrisWere Ha! Are modern websites even usable with lynx? Many seem to rely on so many components that I wouldn’t think would work well in lynx. (Admittedly, I haven’t fired up lynx in probably 20 years, other than a few random times to show someone how the web looked in the early 1990s pre-Mosaic)

Happy #Solstice ! For those of us in the northern hemisphere where I live, this is #WinterSolstice … the shortest day of the year and therefore the darkest in terms of light. We all know that the days only get longer from here on out… and we are excited! For my friends in the southern hemisphere, this is #SummerSolstice and the longest day of the year. I would expect they probably feel as we do in June. 🙂And so the world keeps on turning… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/December_solstice
