And there it is, monetization before decentralization. #Bluesky They're selling domains. I knew it.

@noondlyt I mean I think this mostly makes sense. You can have a domain as your username and you can use either an existing domain or get a new one (I have my domain as my username for example). I don’t think that this is necessarily antithetical to decentralization.

@tariq It's not but it demonstrates that they are concerned first with making money and second or third with a decentralized platform. This is not what Jack talked about a year ago. Decentralization is not the priority.

@noondlyt that’s fair, I think I would agree if it was about the same amount of effort to implement the two. I think this is a simple “referral for new domain purchases with namecheap” compared to implementing their own domain system. I think if I was in their shoes I’d do a similar thing because it’s a quick win that makes some money and enables me to focus on other things.

@tariq They never told their users that they would need to monetize. That's the first issue. The transparency has been problematic. Timelines are nonexistent publicly. And Jack is over on Twitter defending elon. Red Flags abound.

@noondlyt Could be worse. Bluesky could be using Network Solutions or Godaddy.That being said, this makes me doubt their commitment to defederation. If it was done, they could easily create a package with hosting and domain. That's worth $15/mo or so. But maybe they enjoy keeping users on their official server too much.

@segv11 At the very least it is prioritizing profit over decentralization. "Hey everyone, we burned through $8M in seed money so we need you to pay a partner now to keep this ship afloat" And $8M? Has Jack, the billionaire, really not provided anymore money for this supposed society changing idea?

@noondlyt @segv11 it isn’t either/or…
