In our language, "lykke" means happiness.It sounds very close to the English word "luck"Our word for luck is "hell"Don't laugh.Slabs of rock found on a mountain are called "helle". They hell, i.e. lean or pitch, one way.So if it just happened to lean that way, this is luck.

@thor Luck in Old English was "hap." Happy, happen, perhaps, hapless. I wonder if hap and hell have a common origin.

@jameshowell hell is from the Old Norse concept of Hel. The kingdom of death. Similar to Greek ideas of Hades and Styx.We say "helvete" when we curse.from "hel" as in the kingdom of death, and "vete" as in some kind of punishment.

@realcaseyrollins @jameshowell OhostIt originally referred to fresh cheese, like Philadelphia cheese, since we didn't do solid aged blocks of cheese in Scandinavia originally.It has something to do with stirring up milk, or making a milk soup.
