I keep finding these funny little eight legged ants all over, and couldn't be happier about it. I've found two crawling up my leg even. Like ants, they seem very sociable. I think they resemble the Arboreal slender ants more than their namesake myself. Both types of ants are super abundant where I photographed this spider.Red Weaver Ant-mimicking Spider (Myrmaplata plataleoides)Sri Lanka

The first photo is another spider from today that actually looks much more like the asian weaver ants. The second photo is a weaver ant from the colony where it was seen. Perhaps it should be a start to a new thread... Oh well. I have lots of weaver ant photos now.#Ants #Formicidae #Spider #Spiders #SriLanka #Mimicry #InsectInteraction

@twizzt Strangely enough, both spiders seem to be missing 2 legs (though a different set)? Would this attribute to their disguise? Can ants (or whatever it is this disguise helps them cheat on) count? Do the spiders consciously remove two of their legs or did these two individuals just get unlucky?

@kmmich I think they are just battle wounds. Most I see have all eight legs.

@twizzt truly, start with an invertebrate, add a few million years of evolution, nature can do almost anything

@twizzt @nev I’m always a bit surprised that these kind of “disguises” are effective on creatures that experience the world so differently than we do.
