@ChristineMalec I've shared photos at a few events and I would say that there is the occasional look of revulsion which is quickly replaced with intrigue. I describe most things as cute to be openly manipulative. For reactions, I've found words leading up to the pictures to be as important as the picture itself. If I say "Now we'll see a cute fluffy fuzzball" The response is So cute. If I introduce the same with "Next a vicious predator with massive fangs." The reaction will be different.

@ChristineMalec That would take a real specific group, but it just might work.I don't collect anymore so I don't really show photos of parasitoids as they are so difficult for me to photograph in the field, but their looks and life histories really do seem quite alien. Maybe I'll have to post some old parasitoid photos here.

Happy #HumpDay and for those who celebrate, a wacky #WeevilWednesday to you too!The insect pornographer strikes again. This seems to be one of the really odd couplings that don't seem like they should work yet somehow do. Is it just me or does it seem like they like the camera being there? I have no idea what species or even genus these are.#Colombia #Weevil #Insects #Curculionidae

@futurebird Caterpillars who have parasitoids eat toxic leaves as well. There was something else that ate toxins too rid themselves of nematodes. I want to say grasshoppers but I honestly don't remember.

Happy Wednesday! This is a cactus eating weevil. I didn't have a lens that allowed me to zoom out to capture the plant better unfortunately.#WeevilWednesday #Weevils #Curculionidae #Colombia #Cactophagus #Insects #Arthropods

@futurebird @alexwild We really need more people to sit around and watch ants all day. Is there a grant for that? I'll be the first to sign up!

Did somebody say isopod? I saw this cute little bugger a couple days ago. I really like how this one turned out despite the tail being out of focus. It's a Little Sea Pill Woodlouse.#Arthropods #Isopoda #Cubaris #murina

The six year old told me today "Life is great with a cozy blanket under a sheet of ants!" I can only imagine the train of thought going through that beautiful crazy little mind to come to a point where it was necessary to verbally express that statement. I wish I had more context for you, but I've got nothing. I feel as a parent I'm either doing things right or very, very wrong...#parenting #ants

@futurebird I really liked that book. I was pushing the #NeverHomeAlone tag hard for a while, but it never took off unfortunately.

@futurebird I don't remember where, perhaps Reddit?, there was a thread of people pondering insects while on LSD. It was really fascinating. There were deep musings of how they interact with the world and experience it. It actually made me see insects in a different light despite me already having a profound fondness for them.

Here is another ant. I still haven't gotten clarification on how the common names are applied to this group. I learned them as valentine ants, but it seems like most call them acrobat ants and yet others call them cocktail ants. If you know something about how or when to apply these common names, please let me know.#Formicidae #Crematogaster #Ants #Insects #Nature #Photography #Oklahoma

@futurebird And visually, that makes sense. So I stick with valentine... These particular ants didn't walk around with their tushies in the air business that many of them do. They were more arboreal than the groups I usually photograph too. So then I was thinking, since they are often running on railing or on thin twigs, are these the acrobat ants? Stupid common names....

@futurebird Interesting. Some crematogaster groups must just be mad all the time then. Like weaver ants... they are never happy to see me... time to go poke at some valentine ants I guess. They aren't super common here in Sri Lanka though.

@futurebird It's even wearing mites over its eyes like jazzy Elton John glasses. Unfortunately the side shot I have is largely out of focus...
