Does anyone know what happened to https://abstrusegoose.com? Everything is gone other than the home page which just contains a cryptic message. The RSS and Atom feeds just contain a single entry from 2023-12-08 with the description "..."According to the Wayback Machine, it was still normal last week. I hope the author is doing OK right now

rip, now https://abstrusegoose.com/ is just a completely blank page, and the only sign of life is a meta tag with the content "Perseverance overcomes almost everything, even nature."全玄鴻 (the author) hasn't updated the site in several years, so I guess the site is going to go down someday, but it's weird that the web server is still up, but serving a nearly blank file

I liked Abstruse Goose more than xkcd actually, but my all time favorite webcomic is definitely Proof of False whose server *is* forever down but still accessible at https://web.archive.org/web/20171102132233/http://proof-of-false.the-user.org/1it even uses comic sans!

Wait, I just discovered that stuff under https://abstrusegoose.com/secretarchives is still up!!! for instance, https://abstrusegoose.com/secretarchives/monkeyalso, this is probably a long shot, but I'm trying to find my favorite abstruse goose comic on archive.org which I remember mentions Genghis Khan and becoming a lawyer, but I don't remember the number or the title so I might just have to look through all of them... does anyone happen to know which one I'm talking about?

I tried searching for it using multiple search engines but all I got was stuff about Genghis Khan having a lot of descendants. Sadly, there's no explainxkcd.com equivalent that I can easily search in.

I found it! First, I tried https://github.com/hartator/wayback-machine-downloader but it was super slow and getting rate-limited.But I managed to find the PNG for the comic by searching on https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://abstrusegoose.com* for various words related to the comic, since the PNG files all have very descriptive names like "no_cats_were_harmed_during_the_2018_ImageNet_Challenge_my_robot_however_is_going_to_need_years_of_therapy.png"

To find the actual number of the comic, I saw that wayback_machine_downloader was able to download most of the HTML files but not the images, so I grepped through those for mentions of the image name.And here it is: https://web.archive.org/web/20230326160247/https://abstrusegoose.com/606

@a might be a bit flip, or the XML handler forgot to ate breakfast <link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="Atom 1.0" href="atomfeed.xml" /view-source:https://abstrusegoose.com/

@iacore Yeah, I noticed that too, and I think it's just a sign that the website is no longer being maintained.The site stopped regularly posting new comics in 2015 or so, in then a small new batch was added in 2018, and nothing more since then.Another weird thing about Abstruse Goose is that a lot of the numbers are skipped, so the highest numbered comic is 611 despite there only being 525 comics.

@iacore Also, the site requires specifying a user-agent, probably to slightly discourage bots, so you have to docurl -sA "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:60.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/81.0" -v https://abstrusegoose.com/secretarchives/monkey
