Scrimmock - A customer who, having spent the best part of four hours on the phone with you about a problem device and you turn up on site after 6 hours of travel time, discover that they haven't plugged it in.

@johnnyd_cm Pro tip: Before going on site, tell the customer you need to perform a "hard reboot", which specifically requires them to remove the cord from the back of the device, wait one minute, then plug it back into the back of the device. It lets them save face by not having to admit that it was already unplugged.

@tek This happened a number of years ago. A prison had an LED electronic display system and needed a special transmission box to send data via serial cable to each. 4 hours on the phone and couldn't determine the problem. There was a mass of cables under a desk where the box lived. I pulled the mains cable and saw a plug move. Plugged it in and it all worked. They thought it was plugged in but couldn't be bothered checking.

@johnnyd_cm It's happened to all of us. You're among sympathetic friends.

@tek Thing is, they were asked three times was the box plugged in and they said yes three times. The pile of wires said there was no way in hell they could determine that. It just said "Just come out and sort it, it's too much for us!".I pulled the cable from the box and saw a plug move. I pulled again, just in case it was a different plug that was caught up on the cable, but it moved again. I pulled the plug out of the melee and said "I think this is your problem!". Plugged in, it worked.

@johnnyd_cm There needs to be a surcharge, I tell ya. Like, if a tech can solve the problem in under 30 seconds, you've gotta pay extra.

@tek They paid the call out charge and my overtime, so I didn't complain!
