The last Christmas when my dad was still alive. It was also the last Christmas I was still home before I moved away. Felt like we’d have celebrations like this every year. Always add a hint of truth in your experiences, both in what was gained and what was lost to time.

The most memorable holiday celebration for me was one particular Thanksgiving during which my extended family on my mothers side all came to my grandfathers house for dinner.I remember it because it was the only occasion in which I got to see so many members of my family together. It was nice, and, in retrospect, it gave me a feeling of belonging which was and still is absent in my life.As for its application for writing holidays, I think I'd use that memory as an example of the real function of holidays. That is to say, I'd keep in mind that the holiday tradition in part serves to bind a people together as family, society, nation, etc. A holiday well written should probably bring people together in some large capacity. At least, that's what comes off the top of my head.

I remember one from a dream, Thanksgiving maybe, where the party went on into the night, then a green glowing mist descended in the yard outside, and the Grim Reaper walked into the house...(And this was before Dead Like Me)

I have two distinct memories. One of them is when we had Christmas at my parents' house and everyone on my mom's side was there, including the out of state relatives. I remember me and my sister playing ping pong against my mom and one aunt and the hilarity of it all. Meanwhile, my dad was trying to show my grandma how to use the Wii for bowling. The other memory is the one time we went downstate to my dad's family. I don't remember it well other than those cousins running around in brand new pajamas (and I got new pajamas), but I think I only remember it at all because it was about the only time we ever went downstate to his family for Christmas (long drive and it always stormed that day). Both have a running theme of full family togetherness and shenanigans. Interestingly enough, in one Thanksgiving scene that I have in my books, Tommen reflects on what Thanksgiving used to be when he was a kid in the 1850's, helping his ma and pa prepare for the festivities with all the other families.

I travelled to my sister's for Thanksgiving. I had been corresponding with one of her colleagues whom she introduced me to. On Black Friday, I took my sister's friend for a day in New Orleans. I remember being worried, because the weather was cold and rainy. We made our way to the Cafe du Monde, and I remember her smile as we warmed ourselves with coffee with chicory and beignets. We've now been married over 12 years.
