I do believe we will see a return to city-states in the near future, but I would prefer these city-states were autonomous and independent of one another. What this author is all gitty about is maddening but paints a picture of the future the "elites" are dreaming of. "The Return of the City State (and the Slow Death of Nation States)"https://www.romankrznaric.com/outrospection/2018/01/01/4953

What this article is refering to IS NOT autonomy. "The 279 US city mayors who pledged to support the Paris Agreement on climate change..." "They’ve been organising into interdependent networks, such as the Global Parliament of Mayors, the C40 global network of cities committed to acting on climate change, and the Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities."

@Invictus While I disagree that we're going to see city-states, I think it would be great because it would provide a path to a national divorce. The divide in the US isn't red states vs. blue states, it's red countryside vs. blue cities; the only practical separation path that doesn't involve a civil war is a league of city states splitting apart from the rest of the country. It won't happen because of progressives pathological need for totalitarian control, but it's a nice idea.
