Tbh instagram is more privacy friendly than Mastodon. In instagram facebook has ur data. On Mastodon everyone has.

@grillchen but masto collects less data, doesn't have it's tracking pixels all around the web and also it's not like your IP and other PII from outside the presentation layer is shared over AP. At the end of the day you need to be careful about what you post publicly no matter the platform.

@mononoaware if u trust the server. but it is mostly less secure since the messages itself can be collected by everyone instead of just facebook

@grillchen yes and no, fedi allows you to pick an instance that'd keep you from some known cesspools by defederation of have yours do so, but that's it. smh it bothers me that as an user all you can do is mute, not block instances. but on the other hand, nostr doesn't even do that, no people congregating in specific groups with their own rules, everyone can run a relay and interact with anyone. maybe also because of this it hasn't succeeded as much as fedi, if only one could have a way to isolate oneself from stupid btc fans. Speaking of which, it all makes me think of fedi as "bitcoin of social networking" due to btc's transparent, pseudonymous nature. while we are probably yet to see a more widely adopted next generation alternative or a set of improvements that'd be the equivalent of privacycoins if we're to use this comparison. maybe the fight against Threads will lead us there.

@mononoaware respecting a block is a social contract by server developers. there is afaik no technical reasons for blocks not to be ignored completely. defederation is useless if someone just wants to scrape all kind of data

@mononoaware to quote"Say server A finds the users on server B to consistently be abusive, and chooses to defederate with it. “Defederating” will make all content from server B unavailable on server A, and users of server B cannot comment on posts of or direct message users of server A. "Server B can still read all posts by server A. from a privacy perspective every post federating to any instance is an open letter
