One of the smartest things we’ve done is to keep a small cache of kids-birthday-party scale gifts around for when we inevitably forget to get a gift for such an occasion. Worked out well today when one of our Christmas guests brought their 6 year old boy along on very short notice. He got to open a Lego set along with the other kids. This is probably my one and only parenting hack.

@patzearfoss Correlary: if your kids get too many gifts at birthday or Christmas, you can stash away one or two without their noticing/remembering. It can months later be either regifted or the emergency gift as you’ve described. 🙂
