It has been a really bad week for the Russian Air Force, that has lost five fighter jets. @mok0 @EuromaidanPress Probably yes. I have not seen a definitive list of armament but air defense is the role that F-16 is usually expected to play from the beginning.

@anderspuck @mok0 @EuromaidanPress As an airborne missile would be smaller, and carry a smaller radar profile, a Russian pilot would have less chance of seeing the incoming missile in time to react. In any event, what a great Christmas present for Ukrainian soldiers, if this reduces the use of guided bombs. #SlavaUkraine

@anderspuck @EuromaidanPress Interesting theory! Clearly they must have done something to lure the Russians to be operating in a safe distance. The electronic warfare found in modern Western jets is probably something they are not used to.

@anderspuck @EuromaidanPress I saw several posts already about russian channels claiming F-16s are already in active service in Ukraine. But while I hope this is a surprise appearance, I’ll believe it when officially verified by more reputable sources.Whatever those jets got hit by, it is a nice tally and a great job done by Ukrainian air defense.

@anderspuck @EuromaidanPress Patriot seem most likely, but agree it's an interesting theory. The F-16s have been said to be incoming soon, and saw chatter on birdsite of ukrainians hearing unusual planes.OTOH, news of RUAF pilot getting lit up by "new, powerful radar" recently would probably indicate Patriot..? But I guess radar could also feed info to F-16s
